Default Question

Can you still be positive for diabetes if your blood sugar test always are in a normal range?

My dad was Dx with border line diabetes and he has accuallity controlled it very well with diet. When I'm visiting he checks my sugar levels like he does his (he knows how I feel about the posibility that I could be diabetic).

Jennlynn,

Very interesting questions. Let me say that the answer is both no and yes. It is possible to have pre-diabetes (which honestly should be treated just like you have diabetes because you can still get complications at these levels) and have normal fasting blood tests. I have always had normal fasting and normal A1C tests BUT my after meal numbers... 1 hr and 2 hr post meals have been WAY too high... anything over 120 is considered not normal. But, I would have never know unless I had had the glucose tolerance test or been taking my own blood sugar just to check. I personally now follow a low-carb diet (as best I can), exercise, and take Metformin XR 500mg a day.

Now the flip side to that answer is no, you can't have diabetes. If you have taken all the blood sugar tests possible--- fasting, glucose tolerance, random and all have come in at "normal" levels, then you do not have diabetes but since it runs in your family you need to be careful and watch out for it!
