hi all
i am new here and just now coming to grips with having pcos. was diagnosed in college and ignored it after all the tests and endocrinologists etc when the meds they put me on caused some severe depression.
i am finally realising though that i need to take care of myself and i will say that the worst part of this whole thing is the excess hair for me. your posts have been very helpful in reading about the laser treatments etc. i am wondering how i would go about finding a place that does that and if you all know an average cost of the procedure.
also is low carb dieting the only way to go for pcos inflicted people? i am vegetarian and HATE the low carb thing as i cannot stand to eat fish and tofu 7 days a week.
thanks for any help you can give.
As far as cost, that varies widely. I am only paying $165 for my first 5 Lightsheer Diode treatments (used a coupon from the paper for buy 3 get 2 free; they are normally $55 each). I am only having one area (chin) treated, and the price depends on how many areas treated as well.
As far as diet, many women on this board follow some kind of low or lower carb diet, while some do not. Once the weight is lost, often many of the symptoms of PCOS are lessened. The trick is losing the weight, though. Many women with insulin resistance find that lowering their carb intake really helps. You will find much information in the diet and exercise forum. Be sure to check out all the info in the stickies at the top of the page.
Good luck!
Linda

thanks so much linda.
i have to say the cost is not nearly as bad as i thought it would be. please let me know how all of this is going for you. do you know how successful treatments are?
also, what is the IR diet?? i have found it difficult to lose weight, even while exercising and eating healthy. I am just thinking perhaps i need to take a different approach where the eating is concerned. i will try about anything.
Although my treatment costs for laser are very reasonable, it is not the norm. One place I was looking into charged about $150 per treatment of the chin. Laser removal at a medical facility seems to run higher than a salon. Also, be prepared for at least 8 treatments, which is the average needed for women with PCOS.
I have my third treatment on Oct. 11, and I will post about my experience again. I have posted about my first two on this board.
Good luck!
Linda

i am heading out to find the IR Diet book right now. and your idea regarding tofu sounds great. i actually DO eat fish, just can't stand the thought of eating it more than twice a week at most. wouldn't want to start smelling like one.
also i have read the atkins diet books and felt like i could never actually do that. this IR one sounds great though. i like that i don't have to limit my veggies and i can actually eat fruits. so hopefully it will work for me.
i will check out that link.
thanks again
