Question Question

I have another question. (Since I'm new to the board, you'll probably see me posting lots of them ) After being dx with depression at 16, I was dx as actually bipolar at age 24. Although it's usually considered to be an inherited chemical imbalance, is it possible that the hormone imbalances from the PCOS could have had any cause in it, or maybe trigger the episodes? Do any others out there have a similar dx?

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

I didn't have a chance to respond to your other post so I am killing two birds with one stone (It occurs to me as I write that that is a really terrible expression!).

First, welcome to the thin cysters board. Like you, I am very thin (~100 lbs) and an atypical PCOSer. I haven't heard about PCOS being linked to low sex drive. I would actually say that I have relatively high sex drive (the RE said it could be because of increased testosterone), something which makes DH very happy . However, when I took BCPs (especially Diane 35) I had a much slower sex drive.

About PCOS and bipolar, I don't know much about it, but I don't see why they might not be linked. From what I understand, PCOS can make our cortisol levels do some funny things, surely having an impact on depresison. I would suggest checking out the depression board on this site as some of the ladies there might know more.

Best to you,
Anne

Hi Elizabeth, and Hi Anne,

If I may... low sex drive is definitely linked to depression, and depression is frequently one of teh side effects for women with PCOS, so I can see how someone would make teh connection between low sex drive and PCOS. But at the same time, high testosterone is also linked to PCOS, which would create teh opposite impression.

Elizabeth, hormones are nothing but chemicals, only that they are natural to our body, hence the chemical imbalance of bi-polar and the hormone imbalance of PCOS might very well be interrelated. For me one definitely has an impact on teh other, PMS for example would increase depressive feelings, and I had a period of fairly elevated testosterone which seemed to impact my mood levels too (much better and more energy)

Anne, I must say though that while I was on Diane 35 I had a much much higher sex drive than any time I went on any other bcp or off of bcp all together. Just goes to show that each of our bodies is unique, and we just need to figure out how teh hormones influence us individually.

Anyways, I am rambling, welcome to teh board Elizabeth!
