Default Question

Hello,

I have a question and I'm hoping you can help.

What are the side effects, if any, to increasing your dosage of meds for hypothyroid, if the current dosage doesn't seem high enough?

The reason I ask is because my aunt asked her dr to increase but was refused because she was told that taking a higher dosage would cause her muscles to collapse. Is this true?

Any help would be appreciated.

Uhm... doctors like to scare you when you don't agree with them, sometimes.

You would have to be pretty severely overmedicated for a long time before your muscles would collapse. There are much earlier signs of hyper that you would notice beforehand and hopefully decrease medication before that happened.

As long as dosage increases are done slowly and you monitor yourself closely for side effects - and take proper blood work into consideration (most doctors just to TSH which tells you only a small part of the picture), you should be fine. You can always decrease meds again if you get hyper.

Default I was overreplaced for a while

My doc upped my dose and I experienced a rapid heartbeat and insomnia as well as anxiety and shakiness. I only went from 0.150 mg to 0.175 and when my TSH was retested, it was too low (meaning that I was overreplaced) so I was put back down to 0.150 and am fine.

Hope this helps.
