Question question about being induced?

I was talking to my doc. today about inducing if I don't have the baby by my due date. Well, he doesn't think its a good idea to induce if I haven't started to dilated or efface on my own.

My question is....Anyone out there who was induced without being dilated or anything??? Did you end up with a csection? Or did you start to dilated after the induction began and how long was the labor?

thanks

Hi Stephanie!

My due date was 8/4/08, however due to my gestational diabetes and the size of my little guy they induced me early and I had a c-section. I wasn't dialated, or effaced. I hope this helps.

Take Care

I was induced without being dilated, I was only slightly effaced.

I was in labor for 18 hours, had 7 epidurals and one spinal. I did dilate to 10 and pushed through 5 contractions but ended up having a c-section. I wouldn't be induced unless it was totally necessary as it was in my case and I am very relieved that I will be having a scheduled section this time around.

I agree with the previous two posts...if you're not favorable, you'll only be setting yourself up for a c-section. I was induced with my DD, but I was already 2cm dilated and about 50% effaced. My labor was less than 6 hours and I pushed less than 5 times.

Good luck to you and I hope your little one decides to come before you have to discuss induction further.

I was induced when I was dialated at 1cm (which I had been for a month), I was in labor 8 hours, and pushed for 5 minutes and the baby was fine.

My water broke at 36 wks, I wasn't contracting, was at about 1cm and that was it when I got to the hospital.

I was induced, they cranked the pitocin to max, no dilation. Stopped pitocin, tried the pill (cervidil?? I think), then started pitocin again, got it pretty high up when ds's heartrate started dropping with each contraction. I was still at 1-2 cm. 12 hrs after I got to the hospital I had a semi-emergency c/s, he wasn't tolerating contractions and I wasn't going to dilate fast enough to get him out safely.

Would not recommend induction unless your body is starting to change on your own already. And the contractions were HELL. I asked for IV drugs (I didn't want an epi and it was too early for one anyways), I don't recommend that either, I don't remember 97% of my ds's birthday now

I was 80% effaced and 1.5 cm dilated and a week late when I was induced. I dilated to 10, 100% effaced, and pushed for 2 hours - still ended up with a c-section. I'm not a big fan of inductions - way too many end up in c-section.

The contractions were hell, dh took pics of mine goign off the sheet. I made it to 6 cm before asking for a epi and I dont think I would have needed one if it hadn't been for the pitocin.

I was dialted 1 cm, and 100% effaced when I was dialted. I never really dilated all that much after the induction. So after 16 hrs of Labor, I had a C section. But, its bc his cord was wrapped around his neck, and so he couldnt come down...

to be honest i think every woman is different. i was induced with ds and everything was fine with me. i was 10 days overdue. they gave me cervadil at 5:45 pm and everything started from there i wasnt dialated or anything when i was induced. well they didnt even need to give me pitocin even though i was supposed to have it. all i needed was the cervadil and i had ds at 5:45pm the next day. no c section. like i said though everyone reacts to everything differently.

I am not to that point yet but I thought I would chime in with info on my BF's delivery. She had her son July 31. She went in 1 week after her due date to be induced and she was at nothing (no dilation or effacement). They first gave her cervidil at 8 am on Tues then decided to start pitocin at about 2pm on Tues. They kept cranking her pitocin but wasn't dilated to 10 and ready to start pushing until late Thurs afternoon. (I think it was about 30-32 hrs of labor after they started the pitocin.) She pushed for 3 hours and he wasn't going to fit. They ended up taking him by c-section.

I was induced at 36 wks for DD due to pre eclampsia. I was not dilated at all. I had pitocin and the pill. Labor only lasted about 5 hours and had my daughter 45 minutes after my water broke.

Being induced was fine with me. I had no problems at all.

Really the efacement is the big thing.. if you are almost totally effaced then you are a good candidate for induction.. if not, either the baby is NOT ready to come, or there is another issue (cord wrapped around the neck, etc) if one of the two things above is going on you will end up w/a C/S.. Not fun to recover from!
