He was told the other night that his 5 yr old daughter has bi polar disorder....with the next line being so do you still want the divorce................thats beside the point
Question is what symptomes will someone show with bipolar disorder? Do the same change when enviorment changes? do the symptomes and in children differ from those in adults? does anyone know what is the youngest age a child can be diagnosed with Bipolar disorder?
Thank you for your time and help

I have a friend who was diagnosed as bi-polar when she was around 5 years old. They got things managed pretty well and things went great until she hit about 12. Then the hormones started flowing more and nothing that they had been doing to manage it worked. She is now 20, and pretty much out of control. Nothing has worked. Her parents have spent over $250,000 trying to treat/control it. They have tried pretty much everything possible. Things have not turned out well for them. I don't mean to scare you. Things can turn out well too. I wish them the best of luck on the long road ahead.
Were having a hard time believe it as the next comment went to so do you still want the divorce........they are in the middle of a divorce, and when she called my brother, she was gettign ready to go out fishing and my neice was with her drunk grandfather...
Let me ask this just to get someone elses opinion. Children are parrots....we knew everything that was going on in florida at my sister in laws house. All my neice has ever seen, from grandma, and uncle, was manic tendancys and very crazy house holds. Nothing is structured....
Could it be that she is acting out what she see.........
thank you for the links. I'll be looking in to those.

Some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder in children age 3-6 are irritability, anger, aggression, impulsivity, continuous and rapid cycling of up and down moods. Also 83% of kids with bipolar disorder have ADHD. Your niece's home life sounds chaotic which doesn't help. Is there a family history of bipolar? If there is, then that may increase the possibility of her having that disorder. Whatever is going on with your niece, I hope she gets the help and support she needs. If she is bipolar, there are treatments and meds that can help.

If your niece was in such a dysfunctional household, maybe your brother should get a second opinion and make sure she is truly bi-polar. My son has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder along with learning disabilities, OCD, ADHD, and the list goes on. We have been struggling for him to be "normal" all his life. Bi-polar runs in his daddy's family, and he acts just like his grandfather when he's not properly medicated. It is not going to be easy, and it is not fun. He is now having intrusive thoughts of hurting himself and others playing in his mind like a broken record. It's gotten so bad that we are running out of options and are trying ECT AKA Electroconvulsive therapy to help him. He's done well so far taking the treatments, but he can't take his lithium during this time, so it's even harder on him than normal. It sounds like your brother is probably gonna end up taking care of his daughter. His soon to be ex will probably not want to deal with this issue. If he does, tell him to get her treated ASAP for his sanity and his daughter's. When my son is properly medicated, he is like a different person. Unfortunately the meds have to be tweaked every so often and it will be hell during that time. It's going to be very hard if that diagnosis is correct, but if he can find the right psychiatrist and be a part of his daughter's treatment, all will be well. I will be praying for you, your brother, and his daughter that things will go smoothly whether she is bi-polar or not. Hugs
Here is a bit of background on my soon to be ex sister in law. She her self likes to do thing for shock value. Her mom and brother have both been diagnosed bipolar. Her brother is also schisophinic (sp?). She likes to tell people things and do things to get peoples attention and make everyone elses world upside down.
Sadly my sil lives in florida we are in california, she has soul physical custody of my neice. We are pretty sure my niece is just fine, as we talk with her everyweekend, and we've seen her. She didn't act in the ways that either of you have discribed what so ever. She acts like what you would condier a normal 5 yr old child. With a lot of energy. Who laughs when something funny happens.
She's never tryed to hurt her self. She has told mommy that she doesn't spend enough time with her. That she never plays with her any more. ( my sister in law used to play with my neice constantly, and sence she's gotten a new boyfriend and had a child with him my neice is being ignored.)
Thank you for your prays. And we've suggested to my brother he go back to court and fight for destiny.

thank you. He's very lucky to have a women in his life right now and they are getting married next year, who teaches children who have these kinds of issues. Bi polar atisum, asburgers, the whole gamate of things.
She's even said that the enviorment if she has bi polar is not a good one, and would like to see destiny get away from my sil because she knows the kind of person my sister in law is.......when she called my brother it was 1 am in florida and she was getting ready to go out fishing and had left my neice with her father the who drinks him self drunk. fall down type.
This is so hard fo us to even just understand. What is making us all question it so much is the comment ' so do you still want the divorce' and the fact we know she is truely extreamly pissed off about my brother marrying is girlfriend.

Well, that is good if she isn't bi-polar. I would fight tooth and nail to get my daughter out of that terrible situation it sounds like she's in. Sounds to me like your SIL only has her daughter around to spite your brother and use her against him. Have him start to document all this with dates and times, and he should be well armed in court. Your SIL will get hers. Hopefully your niece can get out of there soon!
I THINK IT IS VERY HARD TO DIAGNOSE A CHILD WITH BIPOLAR. THEY CANT REALLY TELL YOU OF THE MANIC EPISODES AND HOW THEIR MIND IS RACING. tHE HORRIBLE DEPRESSION ONE FEELS, CAN YOU SEE THAT IN A CHILD. CHILDREN ARE WONDERS...........THEY MIMIC ALOT OF WHAT THEY SEE. I THINK YOU SHOULD DEFINETLY HAVE YOUR BRO GET A SECOND OPINION AND LET THE PERSON WHO IS TREATING THEM ABOUT THE CURRENT LIVING SITAUTION AND THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT CHILD IS AROUND EVERY DAY. WHY DID THEY TAKE THIS CHILD TO SEE A PSYCHIOLOGIST IN THE FIRST PLACE????? WHAT WERE THE SYMPTOMS THEY WERE HAVING?
