Unhappy Question about Depression

Man, the past few days have sucked for me. I get up in the morning and feel like I'm off to a great start. I go to the gym for an hour and then come home. Once I'm home, I sit down and I'm there all day. Unmotivated, completely fatigued, lethargic, irritable and miserable. ALL DAY LONG. Some days I'll sleep four or more hours in the day and then sleep 8+ hours at night. I feel depressed. It feels like a cycle. I'm depressed b/c my house isnt clean, but can't get up b/c I'm depressed. It's not laziness...I literally have no energy.

Here's my question, does this sound like depression to you? I've read that in order to be diagnosed w/ depression you have to experience the symptoms for at least two weeks at a time, but its always just a few days for me and then it passes. Anyone else deal with this? Any advice? I'm feeling down and out today. I barely made it to the computer.

Im sorry you're feeling so blue... but I know just how you feel. although mine has lasted for years and I finally went to see a therapist about two months ago...she refered me to a psyc to see if I needed meds and the dr put me on wellbutrin and lexapro. I have had paxil and serafem in the past whitch helped but not nearly as well as this combo. Ihave energy, I get my stuff done and I feel able to deal with my life. I see the terapist about every week and a half to help talk through some things but the best news is it all is getting better. I definatly think PCOS is linked to a chemical deficancy , I mean there are so many of us that experience this kind of depression. My advice is to go and see someone...tell them how your feeling depressed in short incraments and how often the episodes occur. Just because you don't follow the "norn" (twoweeks) doesn't mean your not having the problem, you know? I hope you feel better soon...

Sleepy's right, you should really see someone and tell them exactly how you're feeling. Do you have a good relationship with your g.p.? They should be able to put you in touch with the right help. I have suffered with depressive episodes for over 30 years, and 5 years ago, my doctor diagnosed me as clinically depressed and I was just too tired to argue anymore, although I was always convinced there was a big physical component to my problem. I kept telling them that I was depressed 'cos I was ill, not the other way round!
Finally saw an endo at the beginning of this year and he has helped me start turning things around, bless him. He thinks it's quite possible that I've been misdiagnosed pretty much from the start, and it's been the PCOS and the horrible hormonal imbalances that have caused most of the problems. I have started taking natural serotonin supplements, Vitamin B and 1000mg. fish oil every day, and it's starting to show results. I know it's going to be a long haul, but as my endo pointed out, if it took me 30 odd years to get this way, it's hardly going to get better overnight!
I still have days when it's hard to even get dressed in the mornings, (I have fibromyalgia, too) but I'm having more good days on balance than bad. Overall, I have started to get back my peace of mind, which is worth a lot. Good luck and do look to someone for help!

Dell..what are natural serotonin supplements...and where do I get them..... I've tried everything and nothing has worked for me... I'm trying again...to get a endo to try me on hormones, even if I do show within "normal" ranges... I've heard that normal is different for everyone even though the labs shows a "standard normal"...

I'm taking 5-HTP as my serotonin supplement--I get them from a health store chain here in the U.K. They are available mail order from the net if your local store doesn't have them. They can make you really sleepy, but that actually works for me as I suffer badly with sleep disorders and I take mine at night. If you don't want this effect, buy the ones without valerian in them. I just take one before bed and they are really making a difference to me.
When I was diagnosed with clinical depression, I tried several prescribed anti-depressants and they just didn't work for me at all. And coming off them I felt like the junkie from hell! Some people find one that suits them and that's great. The guidelines do say that you shouldn't stay on 5-HTP for more than 3 months at a time, but don't say why. I am going to ask my endo about it at the next appointment in July and I'll post about it then. He told me that anti-depressants help you utilise the serotonin in your brain to make you feel better, but if you're not producing enough to begin with, they're no help. If you google for 5-HTP, there's lots of info there.
I hate taking medication anyway, so I am trying to treat myself as naturally as possible just now. I have started the IR diet and I take 5-HTP, Vitamin B complex, 1000mg. fish oil, 35 mg. soy with my blood pressure tablets and diuretics. When I see the endo again, we are going to talk about met if I haven't lost the weight he asked me to. Hope all this helps!
How are you going with the IR diet? I started off really well, but am stalling badly. I am tracking with fitday, but I'm pretty much at sea with how much of everything I should be eating. I know if I go too low I'll stall my metabolism, and too high and I'll gain. So far I haven't really found my happy medium!
This is turning into a novel about me so I'll shut up now!lol. Hope you find something to suit you--hopefully a helpful endo can put you on the path.Good luck.

Well I'm doing well on the IR diet....down 3 pounds... But it's probably all water. Something I have been doing lately that seems to help a bit is eating more fish.... My moods seem to be better...don't have a clue of the correlation. I tried 5HTP that I purchased at the Health Food Store and I didn't see any change. That is interesting what your doctor said about if you body doesn't make enough serotonin then antidepressants won't help...perhaps that is the key with me... Nothing seems to help and everything has so many side effects...by the time that I get used to the OBVIOUS side effects and notice a difference, they up the dosage and it's short lived... Then as you said getting off of them is really bad news... I'm simply tired of the drugs...I've experienced depression since the age of 12...never could figure out what the problem was...why I was always so very sad...

I'm glad that it's working for you...good luck!
