Default question about depression meds

I'm sure some of you have lost loved ones. My dad died suddenly in a car accident a few months ago and I've been feeling horrible lately. I just feel low on energy and I feel like my life is pointless. I have little motivation to do anything and I feel disconnected. It's too overwhelming for me right now. I just want all the pain to go away ;(

Are prescription anti-depressive meds useful? Can I use them temporarily? I'm scared to go on anything cuz people odn't understand SSRI's and their long term implications but I don't care about long term right now cuz I'm so miserable! Please help.

Default Hello me2

Hello me2...

I am so sorry to hear you are sad. I can honestly say that I know how you are feeling right now. I too suffer from depression. I seem to be okay for a few years and then it hits me... It last hit me really hard when my best friend died in 1997.

I can tell you that I have had success on SSRI depressants. In fact just recently, (with the help of my gp physician) I weaned myself off of prozac. I had been on it since last spring (2002) and stopped just in November of 2002.

I have had success with SSRI anti-depressants. However, if you chose to begin taking them, keep in mind that they may not begin to work (or reach full effect) until about 6-8 weeks after you take them. Also, not all SSRIs can work for everyone. Sometimes there is a lot of trial and error.

First of all, I would recommend that you go to your family doctor to discuss how you are feeling. Make sure first that you feel comfortable enough in doing so and that you have a good relationship with your family doctor. It is so important to be able to trust your doctor and not be afraid to tell him/her how you are feeling. If you do not have a good relationship with your doctor then I would make it a goal to find a good one that you trust.

It is also a good idea to consider talking with someone - i.e. a counsellor, social worker, therapist - or to join a support group.

I hope this has helped you. Good luck to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and remember, if you ever want to "chat", feel free to e-mail me anytime at ilovethesmiths@hotmail.com

*HUGS*
