Points: 519.46 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 519.46 | question about diet, pregnancy, met Hi, I'm new here. My name is Kris and I am almost 7 weeks pregnant. I had 2 miscarriages last year, 1 in 1992 and 1 live birth in 1996. I was diagnosed with PCOS in March of this year and was put on Met and 2 weeks later I was pregnant. My question is has anyone had any experience how eating sugars/carbs can lead to a miscarriage? I have been so afraid to eat anything at all uless it is healthy. When people say drink sprite for morning sickness I am scared to death it is going to cause me to miscarry. I mainly drink water and milk. But have had to drink sprite 2 times to help with morning sickness. I also had some sort of crazy craving today and ate 3 dinner rolls and am almost beside myself now with worry. I even called the doctor, he already thinks I am crazy so what the heck? He said as long as my blood sugar does not stay elevated consistently I should be ok. I really watch my diet to include complex carbs but sometimes I even worry if I eat too much fruit. I only told the doctor about the dinner rolls but I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with doctor's saying we can and can't eat while pregnant & on metformin. Has anyone heard that eating too many carbs can cause a miscarriage? And what about the "occasional" sweet or occasional times we splurge. I guess having lost pregnancies before it has made me super paranoid & I am really confused as to how having pcos relates to miscarriage. The doc just put me on the med and said it would help me not have a miscarriage. Also does anyone know if the rate of miscarriage goes down for women with PCOS once they are put on met? Sorry to ask so many questions. I am new to all this and a worry wart. Thanks, kris |

When I started Met, my doctor did not tell me that I needed to follow a carb-restricted diet. I picked that up only from this site; however, I was terrible about doing that. I got pregnant after my third month on Met, and I stayed on Met until I was 16 weeks along. Through that time, I still did eat high carb foods and Met. I had never heard of high carb diets leading to miscarriage; however, if you have blood sugar issues in addition to IR, it could be a possibility.
I drank regular sugar soda throughout my pregnancy--one a day. I have heard that artificial sugars *could* potentially up the risk for miscarriage, so I stayed away from that. But other than that, I pretty much ate just like you are now.
As far as Met reducing the risk of miscarriage in us PCOS'ers, I have heard that our risk goes from about 56 percent, all the way down to 12 percent with Met and that makes the risk the same as a "normal" woman without PCOS.
Good luck! Check with the girls on the Pregnant and Mommies boards, too!

Before getting pg, I watched what I ate very carefully - low gi, complex carbs, etc. Now, though, the extreme nausea has made sprite my best friend. I worry about it too, but my dr said that everything is ok in moderation, and I am continuing to take Met to help lower the IR.
So you're definitely not alone. And yes, taking Met makes a HUGE difference in lowering your m/c rate, so you are on the right path with that. I know it is hard, but try to take it day by day and not worry about every bite that you eat. Of course, this coming from me after I've had a carb-binge today at a bridal shower (and felt guilty about it right afterwards).
