Question about GTT(not during pregnancy) and not sure where to post.
I tried searching and couldn't find what I was looking for so I figured I would ask here. Most of the search results were regarding a GTT during pregnancy and I am not really pregnant.
I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes yet but it does run in my family and my diet as good as it is, is secretly working against me and will probably one day be a contributing factor when I am diagnosed.
I went for a 2 hour glucose tolerence test today. After drinking the orange glucose drink I was pretty light headed and felt a little funny(maybe even giddy) I am now wondering if that may actually mean something or if anyone else felt that way as well?
I have to wait a month to get my results and I am the Queen of impatience so if anyone would be so kind as to tell me what your symptoms were after drinking the glucose drink and what the out come of your test was I would really appreciate it.
Hi Beetle Girl, sorry it took me so long to respond. The feeling you had after drinking the sugary drink is normal. After having you fast then drinking that very sweet drink it is no wonder we get a little giddy. I really noticed it because I had given up all sugar so it hit my system with a BANG! I told my DH I felt like I was on a sugar high!
The test results will be different for everyone of course. It is to show how well your body breaks up sugar. Honestly I don't remember my results but it was so silly when I took the test anyway because I already knew I was diabetic. Try to reign in that impatience! This is a hurry up and wait kind of thing.
Have you been low-carbing prior to the GTT? If so, you can have a more pronounced reaction to the glucose solution, and it quite possibly will skew the results (you could be misdiagnosed with diabetes). If you were not eating at least 250 g of carbs daily for the 2-3 days prior to the test, I suggest you inform your doc. The reason is, when eating LC you don't have glycogen stored in your liver, so your body will be shocked by the high sugar load and may not be able to bring your blood sugar down to within normal limits in time to pass the test. However, if you really are diabetic, it really won't matter much because you will fail the test either way.
Here is a study and some info about this:
"Impairment of Glucose Tolerance in Normal Adults Following a Lowered Carbohydrate Intake."
authors: PEY-YU WANG, TAKASHI KANEKO, YUAN WANG, MASATO TAWATA1 and AKIO SATO
Tohoku J. Exp. Med., 1999, 189 (1)
"Some normal people are falsely classified as having impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) if they are given an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) when their last meal contained very few carbohydrates. In this study, the duration of carbohydrate restriction was extended to one and three days and the relationship between the carbohydrate restriction and the glucose tolerance after an OGTT was examined. Two different groups of normal subjects were placed on high-carbohydrate (80% carbohydrates) and low-carbohydrate (10%) diets before an OGTT; one group for one day and the other for 3 days ....
The longer the period of carbohydrate restriction, the severer was the glucose tolerance impairment....
The impairment of glucose tolerance after carbohydrate restriction may be associated with the Randle effect, which is the activation of the glucose-free fatty acid cycle."
The purpose of the GTT is to determine an individual’s blood glucose response to an oral load of glucose under standardized conditions. The test should be carried out after a 12 h overnight fast and after having consumed a diet containing at least 250g carbohydrate per day for at least 3 days. The subject should remain at rest without smoking for the duration of the test. The blood glucose level must be measured fasting and 2 h after the oral glucose load dissolved into 250-300 ml of fruit flavored water.

I am not low carbing at all. I probably eat more than my share of carbs. I have super high cholesterol so if I were to diet I would probably get stuck with low fat healthy stuff.
My last bloodwork that my family doctor performed was borderline(can't remember my results for the life of me) I was told at that time that based on another simular consectutive test result he could technically class me as a diabetic.
Since this is another doctor I am hoping the results will hopefully differ from what my family doctor told me cause I love sugar and I can't live with out it.
I was hoping that if most women did feel giddy after the test that it would make my chances of having diabetes even less. So in that sense I guess that if it is normal thing to feel giddy than I probably have nothing to worry about. I just hate having to wait a month to find out some test results.
