I lost a big chunk of my hair before starting metformin. Do you think metformin will make the hairloss worse?

It's hard to say. For some people it has, and for some it hasn't... some it's even slowed the rate of hairloss.

I would definitely take a b-12 supplement while taking met. It might lessen the chances of hairloss, and it will help with any potential met side effects.

I take NOW Ultra B-12. It's a liquid and it has folate and a bunch of other B vitamins.

My hair was falling out up until a week ago, now it seems to be growing back and nice and full and healthy again. I don't know if its because my body adjusted to the Metformin, or if its the B12 finally kicking in. Either way, I definitely recommend that anybody on Met start taking a b complex and B12.

It's funny you mention hair loss ON met. I just stopped it about a month ago (I'm not IR and it wasn't helping my cycles return) and boom....my hair loss is terrible! I had only been on it about 3 months. Now I'm wondering if I should be on it. Perhaps it's a big hormonal swing??

I personally had a ton of hair loss prior to starting Metformin, so I don't think the drug is the main reason for that effect. When I started Metformin, I also took prenatal multivitamins, and noticed a significant decrease in hair loss. I think the benefits of Metformin are great! I lost almost 20 pounds after starting met without any diet changes, and it brought my FSH/LH levels to a proper ratio. Just make sure you take your daily vitamins with it, don't get scared.

i went to my gyn today for mt 3mo checkup. i shared my concern for hairloss with the nurse and she asked if i'd had a lot of diahrrea since being on met. apparently, the hair loss has something to do with that. when i saw the dr he suggested that i increase my calcium intake and that should help with hairloss. i hope he's right! i've been taking extra vit. b for about a month now. i'm still losing hair but i bet that whatever i do needs to happen for a few months before i'll notice a difference. my dr is ordering a full workup on my blood test to make sure that other factors aren't playing to the hair situation. i'm also changing over to met ER. so with the new recommendations on calcium, i'll be taking 12 pills each day! i bought 2 more pill cases today, because my pills/supplements can't fit in one case anymore lol.

i think the vitamin b supplements are doing their job! it's been a little over a month and there's been a huge difference in the amount of hair i'm losing. i'm noticing some regrowth around my temples too.

ugh... me too. I've been losing a lot of hair for years now and am possibly going to start met next week (as soon as my blood tests come in I'll know)... but the thought of losing any more hair terrifies me
