Okay I've got a question...can I lower my IR through diet or do I have to stay on Met forever? I would really like to be able to get my IR undercontrol through dieting...can this happen? Thanks.
I've realized my sister is over 300 lbs and is relying on the Met more than diet and is very close to being diabetic

Yes yes yes and no I am not having a you know what I have been on IR for about 3 months and I have lost 40 lbs. I am a full blown diabetic with morning blood sugars over 260 and I had been taking met for 10 years since I was 18. The moment I got the information and understood the carb and insulin connection I started the eating plan and moderate exercise plan at the YMCA. I have now had normal blood sugars in the a.m. for almost 2 months less than 120. I even forgot my met last night and was under 120. So it can be done, I am not injecting insulin anymore and I hope to one day be met free, I just wouldnt do it now because now it is working so well now that I know how to do the whole thing.
Thank you sooooo much for you help! I can't thank you enough!!!!!!!

I agree with Salty. You definitely can get your IR under control with diet. Eating right (what's right for you), losing weight & exercising will all help tremendously. Tell your sister that medicine helps but diet is key. I'm type 2 & I already have complications from this disease. From what I understand, once you have Diabetes you have it forever, but if you are pre-diabetic you can avoid it with some effort. And kudos to you for not relying just on medicine to help yourself. Don't get me wrong - I take Met & other meds & I'm not against them, but if you can eliminate any, that's great.

yes you can---i did it before i got pregnant...i was running 4-5x a week and watching what i eat. the drawback is: you have to really be committed......it is hard and takes a lot of discipline. you can eat very little "fun" foods.....which sucks!!
say goodbye to pizza, fries, potatoes, cookies, etc.
however, i think it is worth it, b/c i am not fond of taking drugs. you just never know if they are safe long-term. Remember Vioxx?
good luck!!
