I'm just wondering what the policy is at your place of work in terms of leave for adoption? I know we are entitled to 12 weeks of job protection under FMLA (if the company you work for falls under FMLA). My question is, do you get any paid time? I thought I did because I thought it was maternity leave; apparently not. I get zero paid time. I just found out yesterday and I'm pretty bummed.
Thoughts?

I don't know the answer to your question as I am in Canada, however we are considering domestic adoption, and we are thinking about registering with a number of agencies and possibly in the US as well so that we can open our selves up to as many options as possible.
Can you tell me what agency you went through? You were matche so quickly you must be extatic!!
Congratulations...I hope that everything runs smoothly for you.

Paid time depends on the policies of your company. All FMLA does is ensure that if your workplace is of a certain size, you may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave without losing your job. There are no laws in the United States that guarantee any kind of paid maternity leave. I work for the federal government, and I was able to take several months off at full pay, but that's because I had been banking it up for many, many years, and the federal government (or at least my agency) allows you to use up to 6-8 weeks of sick leave (banked, not provided if you don't have it saved up) to recover from childbirth. They do not grant any additional paid time related to maternity/adoption. Sadly, your situation is pretty typical.

Paid time is based upon your sick and your vacation. If you don't have any or used them all up then you are paid. You are gauranteed that time, but not the pay. That is how ours was.
Paid time off, vacation time and sick time are all dependent upon the company you work for... My company gives paid time off for adoption and maternity, but the company I worked for prior to this did not give paid time off at all for adoption and before you could use your maternity leave, you had to deplete all of your vacation time first.

Thanks, that's all I was looking for, just what's "typical." It's fine, I'm not upset at the company at all, just wish I'd known earlier so I could have saved a little faster!

DH saved up time so he could take a little time off work (we adopted internationally so he needed to be off 3 weeks while we were out of the country) b/c his company doesn't offer paid paternity leave (I don't work). Are there any holidays that you can count on while you're off or sick/personal time that you can use?
Congrats on being matched, that was REALLY fast!

we paid for an independent std that covered 40% of net income for six weeks. now we have std through work that pays for 60%. nothing is actually paid by the employer though. Adoption and maternity leave follow the same rules.
We aren't prepared in any way, shape or form! Thankfully we have a ton of family and friends that are dying to help out. Now I just have to restrain myself for the next few weeks and save up cash so we can just get anything that we still need when the big day gets close.
And yes, this is unthinkably fast, average for our agency for a healthy infant is a 1-3 year wait. We are just beside ourselves with excitement! (Oh no, I've become one of THOSE people!)
