Question question about levoxyl

I've been taking levoxyl for about a week (25 mg) and just feel drained of all energy, more so than usual. I have also been feeling nauseous, however, that started a day or two before I strated on levoxyl, so I don't think the levoxyl is causing that. So my question is, does anyone know if it is normal to feel tired while on this medication when you first start it? Thanks

I am not diagnosed hypothyroid (not yet, anyway, but I suspect I am hypo and will be tested in three weeks). I noticed in your signature that you are taking meds for high blood pressure. I have read that Levoxyl can have interactions with blood pressure meds, and you may need to have your bp med dosage adjusted. Maybe what you are experiencing is low blood pressure? Just a thought.

I am Hypothyroid and have taken Thyroxine for 7 years. I know it took me 2 years before I began to feel the tiredness lift (it took an unusually long time to find the right dosage) but I still get bouts of tiredness every few weeks or so.

If you were feeling nauseous before you began taking it, could it be that you have a viral infection, which could also be making you tired?

If you still don't feel right in a week or so, I would go back to your Dr. I have read that intially you can feel more tired until your body adjusts to the new levels.

Hope you feel better soon.

wooooooooosh, that is a long time.

I have read different figures for how long it usually takes, but the most common one I read is 6-8 weeks. In my case, I really did feel worse before I got better. In fact, my lowest point was about 3 weeks after I started taking thyroxine. It just takes a while for the body to catch up, and begin to be normal again.

Your doctor should test you again, 6-8 weeks after starting the meds.

Bananasmom,

Yes you are right, 2 years is a long time for the tiredness to lift. In fact, I still suffer with bouts of fatigue and through my own investigations, I have discovered that this can indicate an underlying adrenal problem. I am currently in the process of having private adrenal function tests (my Drs refuse to do any tests, saying there are none available on the NHS.) A few months ago, I insisted on a DHEA test and it came back abnormal, showing that this area of my adrenal function is poor.

Anyone who does not respond very well to thyroid hormone replacement, should ask for an adrenal function test. In fact, the guidelines (which most Drs in UK refuse to follow) are that an adrenal function test, should always be performed before starting a patient on Thyroxine, to rule out an underlying adrenal problem, as this can mask itself as a thyroid disorder!

I have been on 75 mg of levoxyl for almost four years. The doctor put me on 1 week bedrest to allow the medicine to get in my system. It took a good month or so before we started to see a difference.
