I posted this in the wrong place last night (I posted as a reply to a different thread...oops)
The possible match that we are looking in to has medicade. The lawyer told us that if she goes with the adoption she will lose her medicade.
How does this work? I don't understand it?
Can anyone help me out here?

Son (2 1/2 year)
I don't understand that either. The only thing I could think of is that if you adopt Medicaid won't pay for the baby's portion of the hospital bills. I was on Medicaid a while back and was considering putting up a child for adoption and was never told that I would lose the Medicaid if I did that. Then again this was over 6 years ago, so something could have changed.
Well thats what I thought but the lawyer told my husband that if she goes with adoption she will lose it, so we need to see if she would need us to cover the cost of the birth.
I think in some states, the adoptive parents are required by law to pay for the birth mother's medical expenses (and living expenses as well in some states!). So I think how it works is that medicade considers YOU the parents, so YOU are responsible for paying for your child to be born.

Indiana is going through a major overhaul of the Medicaid system. I have had to learn it and keep abreast of the changes due to my job. I am sure it has something to do with a law. They are looking for ways to get out of paying for many, many things. She probably has pregnancy medicaid only, which means only the cost relative to the pregnancy would be covered but since she is thinking of adoption then that would be another avenue, different income for her and the baby. It is the most difficult insurance to understand. Make sure you look at Medicaid law and you may need to find an attorney who is very fluent in Medicaid law. You won't get a straight answer from anyone who works in the system, at least we have never. The caseworkers don't know the rules. You may be able to call Medicaid themselves and ask general questions. Look up Hoosier Healthwise on the internet.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.

I hope you don't mind if I jump in. I had a simliar question. We are doing an adoption. I don't know if she would technically be a surrogate, but my best friend is willing to carry a baby for us (her egg and donor sperm). We are just starting this process and doing the STD testing for her. Well the nurse at my doc office was VERY attimate (sp?) about her not using her health insurance for any of this. Well I can understand that, but can she get medicare for this to help US with some of the expenses?? We are in CA (us and our surrogate) if anyone has any info. TIA

The hospital tried to bill us for part of our baby's delivery but I just sent them a letter stating at the time the bill was accrued we did not have custody and the baby she was covered by Medicaid. Our insurance would only cover her from the time we took legal custody.
Does the attorney mean that she will not be covered after she delivers? That might make a little more sense or maybe that she will not be eligible for AFDC? Just a thought.
