Question Question about medications.

My therapist recommended that along with therapy, I should think about medications as well. At the end of this month, I have an appointment with a psychiatrist to discuss medicine. I understand that it can be a temporary help for me. However, I don't want to use it as a crutch. I want to be able to deal with my problems and every day life un-medicated

Does anyone have any recommendations on what not to take? Or any questions I should ask the psychiatrist? Or anything at all would be helpful!

Well, I once viewed meds as something I didn't want to do, until it got so bad I had too, and now I am glad I did!

There are MANY drugs out there for depression. I am on celexa which so far is doing great for me. Effexor seems to be the most popular, but can make things worse for a week or so, so if they suggest that you should voice concerns over that. I took paxil in the past, but can no longer take that as it induced some sort of mania(don't mean to scare ya )

You can also go on a med for like 6 months and then hopefully by then you have learned coping skills from therapy and you could come off the drugs!

Be sure to discuss this all with the doc, there are alot of options.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the info. I just don't want to become zombie woman. Or have to rely on med's. Hopefully it can help on a temporary basis.

If you go on Effexxor be sure you take it regularly. It's a ***** to come off of. I tried to and couldn't. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor.

Not all meds make ya feel like a zombie! I know that is a comon fear but there are mant drugs out there to try!

I for one feel good on celexa! The first week or so can be kinda rough as you adjust or maybe have to switch drugs, but millions of people take anti-depressant, and I don't see millions of zombies walkin around!!! Do you??

whatever you decide I wish you the best!

I used to take Wellbutrin and it worked very well for me. Virtually no side effects.

Personally, I use Wellbutrin. I've tried Celexa, Effexor and Prozac. With those 3, there were sexual side effects (no O, if you kwim) I also had some trouble swallowing for a few hours after taking Effexor.

I was a bit hesitant to start also. I got sick of them and went off. A year or so later, my friends practically had an intervention for me and I went back on. I hate taking them, and I hate that I need them to be normal. However, I have come a long way from where I used to be. I couldn't have done that if it weren't for wellbutrin and cytomel. (as well as mentally/emotionally dealing with things)

I will have to ask about Wellbutrin. I want something with very little side effects, but will help.

Thanks everyone for your responses!!

I take Lexapro. It hasn't had any side effects for me. After the first 2 or 3 weeks, the stomach pains went away. I used to be on Zoloft, and didn't like it. I tried to get off Lexapro after 6 months and had to get back on it soon after. I really struggled for a long time with being on an antidepressent, but now I have realized that I'm a better wife, mom, and friend while I'm on one. Hang in there, and you'll be glad you got on one when you look back.

Ive been taking 20mg Celexa and 150 mg of wellbutrin XL.
The only side effects since adding the wellbutrin is -not wanting to eat.
Celexa made me sleepy for a few days.

Ive tried Effexor xr and it had me too wired up and made me edgy.

My sister is on Lexapro, and was sleepy for a few days.

like others say, there are plenty of AD's out there
just have to find what makes you feel good
