Question Question about Met

I was wondering if I could get some input on met? I was recently dx'd with pcos & insulin resistance (12-13-03) after 20 years of going from one Dr to another. My dr put me on 1000 mg met/day as well as provera (5days/every 6wks as needed for AF). I have been reading the posts on here, and have seen that the majority of the ladies that are on met have experienced alot of side effects while taking met, mainly GI problems & nausea. I have not had any of these side effects, so now I am worried that the met isn't working properly. I had my 1st AF in 7 years (yea me !!), but I am assuming it was from the provera. I know it may sound kind of odd to most that I am worried that I am not getting these side effects, but how do I know if the met is actually working? Anyone out there have any input for me... or am I being paranoid? I've also noticed that most of the ladies that are on Met are taking a higher dosage than I am. Should I be on a higher dosage as well or will the Dr raise it later on? I feel kind of dumb asking these questions, but this is the only place where I feel that I can get some honest input on the subject. It seems that everyone else I have questioned concerning these issues look at me like I've lost my mind.

YOU'RE LUCKY!!! Dont worry about not having side effects.... think of it this way... we come to complain about having the side effects... those who dont obviously wont complain. I can tell you this my dad and father have no side effects from it... but me I had some major ones! The way to know that met is working is by your blood test... I'm sure the doctor drew blood before you started... and that will later be used to compare to a blood draws in the future to see how its affecting you. Most likely your dose will be raised since it seems like the higher dose the more everything seems to even out! I'm sure AF showed up because of the provera... now you might want to talk to the doctor about this or you can try it on your own (I try things on my own) I typically skip a dose of my prometrium (also to bring on AF) to see how my body is doing... alot of women will start getting AF on their own.. unfortuantely I havent... but I do spot which I contribute to the met trying to work! lol So that might be something after you've cycled a few times... skip the provera one time to see if your body does anything on its own!

Oh yeah and never feel dumb for asking questions... because typically other people have asked these questions already... and you need to know the answers... and sometimes its just nice knowing that somebody is dealing with the same thing!

Thanks for the reply. After posting I thought I was just being silly. I don't go back to my Dr until 03-04, so I guess she will do more b/w then.
Okay...another question then... Since I had my AF should I do a hpt before I start the next round of provera? I know it would be jumping the gun per say, but I wouldn't want to do any damage by taking it if I were get get or be pg. What do you think?

Sweety, count your blessings! Some people's bodies tolerate met really well, and it sounds like you're probably one of them. But side effects are not an acurate gauge of if the met is working. The only way to know if met is doing what it is supposed to, is by bloodwork and seeing if your hormones that led your Dr to put you on it are improving.

Most Dr's usually wait about 3 months to see if the bloodwork has moved to give your body a little time to figure up from down hormonally. Ask your Dr at your next appt if he will give a requision for blood work after you've been on the drug for 3 months or so and you'll have a better idea.

Hope it helps, and enjoy the fact that you don't need to take part in the bathroom dash.
