Question Question about Metformin

I am taking 500mg at night before bed. Is this a normal started dose? It looks like a lot of you take so much more. Is 500 mg even an effective dose? I am not ttc and I do get a cycle ever 2- 3 months. Curious...

I'm currently taking 500mg every evening also. This dose has been effective for me.

Maybe it depends on how bad your IR is. I started out on 500mg of Met ER and I just read from one post that someone else started on 500mg and it took her a whole year to work her way up to 2000mg. You may not need that much, however, I've seen contradicting reports like "you have to take at least 1500mg for it to even be effective." Nonetheless, I'd start out slowly and have your levels checked in 6-8 weeks.

That dose is perfectly normal for starting out. Because of what Met does, it's the sort of medication you have to increase slowly, otherwise you can end up with really bad side effects.

I've been on Met for almost a month now and my dosage went like this:
Week 1 - 500mg 1x a day (usually with dinner, so if I did have s/e's I could sleep them off)
Week 2 - 1000mg (500mg w/ breakfast and dinner)
Week 3 - 1500mg (500mg w/ all meals)
Week 4 (Final Dosage) - 1700mg (850mg w/ breakfast and dinner)

At the end of Week 3 I did go in and had blood drawn to check to make sure my levels are all alright.

How quickly you move up will depend on:

1 - How you tolerate the Met. Some people have really bad side effects and need to go a few weeks between increases. Others, like myself, are able to move up every week until they get to their max dosage.

2 - How your doctor chooses to prescribe it and how quickly they're willing to move you up.

Hope that helped!

everybody is different; for some 500mg even only ONCE a day is enough to control their sugar levels, and do whatever else met does, to help with some other symptoms of PCOS...excess hair, weight gain. Others may need the max approved dose that I've heard of (which may have changed)...of 2550mg per day.

It depends on how severe your IR, or diabetes is and how proactive your doc wants to be. Also, before bedtime to start is a great idea:try to avoid the negative side effects...
good luck

Super good idea! My regular Dr refused to give me more than 500 mg. My Endo said 1700!

My RE just started me on 500 mg Metformin XR (extended release). He told me to stay on that for one month and come in for blood tests for liver function. I only have mild PCOS. Once my hormone levels have evened out, I'm starting gonal-f an IUI! I don't know if he will up my Met as I progress or not. We'll see!

I had 500mg to start for the first 2 weeks, then increased to 1000mg. Everyone is different though. I am now up to 1500mg and I recheck with my doctor in about 6 weeks.

Hi

500mg is what i started off on, if your body needs more you doctor will then put the meds up as you need it. But i think most start off at 500mg.
