Default A question about the Pill

A couple of weeks ago I posted about how my old doctor was very unprofessional and rude and I wasn't comfortable with her at all, she also wasn't treating my PCOS symptoms...so I switched doctors. I had my first appointment yesterday and I am very happy...he made me feel very comfortable, asked questions, wanted to get to know me well, and he was very kind and patient. I told him about my irregular periods and my ovarian cysts and I was surprised that he mentioned PCOS, I honestly didn't think he would be familiar with it as I know many doctors aren't. I was very relieved. He hasn't prescribed anything yet because he's waiting for my medical records to be released from my old doctor so he can look at them. I'm thinking he's going to put me on the pill to regulate my periods because he mentioned it once. Here's my question. Is this the same pill that's used as birth control? Because if it is, I don't understand how it works. Aren't birth control pills supposed to supress your period? Also, what if I want to conceive one day, am I supposed to stop taking the pill and then all my PCOS symptoms will come back? I don't understand how "the pill" works, can someone explain it to me?

Yes, the pill is the same as Birth Control meaning there is a slim chance you will get pregnant while on it. The BC that I am referring to which is what most PCOS'ers use is hormonal birth control since that helps with some symptoms. The hormones in the pill go through out your blood stream releasing LH and FSH (other hormones) They prevent the growth of eggs so you don't ovulate, so with out ovulation you can't get pregnant. So no BC isn't used to supress your period, just ovulation. When you decide to get pregnant your doctor will take you off of birth control, it usually takes a few months to get back on track. PCOS symptoms can come back, yes, but you and your doctor at that time can figure out what to do with them when it comes. Also, the pill sometimes just masks the symptoms of PCOS it doesn't "cure" them by any means, so it is always recommended to talk to your doctor to come up with a plan to help with PCOS even though you may experience less symptoms on the pill. Diet and exercise are really key to getting symptoms under control.

Well that's all I got. This is just my knowledge of it, I am not a medical professional. I would definitely go over any concerns you have with your doctor. Also, there are a few different types of pill the one I discussed like I said is the hormonal birth control so not everything I said will apply to other forms of the pill. I hope you get the help you need. Good Luck

The first question is do you want to get pregnant right now? If you do don't go on the pill - but ask about medications like metformin. I believe a lot of people go on the pill to fix external problems eg facial hair and acne) then stop it to work on controlling the syndrome, which would be weight loss and muscle gain.

Yes the pill suppresses your period, don't let him put you on anything like the injection! Its too many hormones for us PCOS'ers (my and many others personal beliefs)

If you do not want to take fake hormones I am on the copper coil or IUD. This stops you having a baby and doesn't put loads of chemicals in your body. So far I have been off the pill for 3 months and things appear to be slowly regulating themselves out (this is after a year of weight loss)

I hope this helps!

(PS I have never had a baby and am still on the coil, many Dr's are against putting it in due to the first 24 hours of pain those who haven't had kids yet get. but those hours of pain were worth it I say!!!

You mentioned irregular periods, so he may have put you on birth control pills to make sure you are shedding your lining each month (it's unhealthy to not shed it..) (I don't know if irregular for you meant no periods or bleeding all the time though)

Glad your doctor is working with you - that's always a great feeling!

Thank you! You've answered all my doubts actually. I was just a little bit confused as to how it worked because I thought ovulating was the same thing as having a period, but I was wrong, and you've cleared it all up for me. Thanks again and yes, I will go over this with my doctor when the time comes.

No I don't want to get pregnant right now, but definately some time in the future. I just hope that the pill won't mess up my body and make it more difficult for me to conceive in the future, because I heard the pill can really throw your body off and it becomes more difficult to get pregnant when you want to.

Thanks! Yes it's such a relief that I finally have a doctor who cares and listens! I've only had one appointment with him but I have a good feeling about him. And yes, by irregular I meant that I get my period about 3 times a year, sometimes not at all. I won't know until my next appointment if he's going to put me on the pill or not though.

Default thank you

Thank you for posting this. I have had the same problem. The Dr. told me I had to go on the pill to regulate my cycle and as well as what OliviaLeigh pointed out...to shed my lining. She told me that I was high risk of getting cervical cancer because I hadn't gotten my period for years and I needed to shed my lining each month. She told me when I'm ready to get pregnant wait until after at least 2-3 months of being on the pill and once I stop taking it to try and get pregnant right away. The reason being that I should still be ovulating at least once after stopping from taking the pill. Honestly she wasn't very helpful. She didn't give me any information about PCOS I found everything out on my own online. If I don't get pregnant which is highly doubtful I will then I will have to go back to her. I'm happy that everyone on this site has provided so much information about PCOS and medications I can be put on to get pregnant. When I go back to the DR. I can ask her what my options of medications are and tell her what I've learned and hopefully she will put me on something else.
