Default Question about starting treatment

Hi Ladies! Finally, my endo has realized that my TSH is too high. I has only once tested below 3 and is usually greater than 6. Anyway, he just told me that to conceive I need a TSH of around 1 (duh, I had known that for a LONG time). So I was put on 25 mcg of synthroid 2 weeks ago. The past two weeks have been just awful, all I want to do is sleep. I've never been a napper, but I have to take a nap almost daily now.

I've read that it takes 6-8 weeks on a given dose for your body to adjust to it, I guess I'm just hoping someone here can give me an example so that I have a light at the end of the tunnel!!

Thanks,

Erica

Sometimes as you start on medication your thyroid takes a big sigh of relief and slows down more. This seems like a bad thing but in reality you want your thyroid to slow down a little so that any swelling it was doing stops, and any antibody response your body was gearing up for it will calm down.

What this means though is that you could need a raise in medication after your initial dose.

Your doctor should test you again in 6 weeks to see how your numbers look on this dose. If they are still not optimized your doc should raise your meds and test again in another 6 weeks.

It can take a while to get meds optimized, and then it can take a while for your body to really heal from the effects of being hypothyroid... for me it took about a year for me to really bounce back.

Thanks so much for your reply Shenacat! And - how exciting that you're almost ready to have your baby! Best wishes for a short, painless, and healthy delivery!!!!
