My dad takes a small dose of Glocophage XR to control his blood sugar. I was reading some of the info he got with it and it says that metformin should be swallowed whole and not crushed.

This worries me because I'm sure that I'll have to be on met soon and I have sooo much trouble swallowing pills....I always bite them.

Anyone have any advice on whether it matters whole/crushed, or any tips on swallowing (I know it's all in my head, that's the problem!).

Most time released pills do need to be swallowed whole and not crushed.

If you need to crush, maybe you should consider the nonXR (time released) version of the pill. You will have to remember to take it several times a day, but you would probably be able to crush it if necessary.

The Glucophage XR cannot be split or crushed because it is time-released. They are pretty big and fairly chalky too, so if you feel like that would be too difficult, you should probably use the regular Glucophage. Those pills are much smaller, and they can be crushed if necessary. Good luck!
