Default Question about thyroid

I developed a wierd lump in my throat a few months back. It feels like my collar is too tight all of the time, even when I don't have anything on. My step-mom has had thyroid problems and said that hers felt the same way. I can't feel it from the outside (like with my hands), but it definitely feels like a lump in my throat. I went to my GP about it, and he had a TSH test done which came back normal (I don't know the number--the receptionist just said it was normal). I was also having salt cravings about the same time (I don't usually add salt to food ever) and I realised that salt here isn't iodised (which it is in the US, where I grew up). I started taking iodine supplements, and the lump disappeared.

Every time I go more than a day or two without iodine, the lump comes back and takes a few days to go away again.

I've always had low temps (around 35.75 C) when charting bbt too, except this cycle when they've been around 36.29, but maybe that's just a residual effect of the norethisterone (progestin) I used to start AF?

Does this sound like a thyroid problem? Should I go back to my GP and push for more tests?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Some people develop goiters from lack of iodine. Goiters basically mean swelling of the thyroid. There are some pretty wild cases out there from areas like china where there is a lack of iodine in the soil and thus the food. Some people's necks swell up and flop over their collar bone.. it's really nasty.

Sounds like you've found your deal, you need iodine. Keep up the supplement if it makes you feel better. If your numbers are ok right now and you don't have any other symptoms that aren't going away with the iodine, just keep it in mind for the future and be ready to accost your doctor about it if the iodine doesn't cut it someday.

As for the craving salt, that sounds like an adrenal problem, as does the low temp. Adrenal glads sit just atop your kidneys and help also to maintain your metabolic rate. You could be low adrenal. Have your doc test your cortisol, don't just do a 1 time a day urine or blood test... make him do a cortisol stimulation test where you get a shot and then an hour later they take readings. That tests your reserves which could be depleted... the other way to go about it is to test the cortisol readings several times in the same day.. "key" points like 8am, 11pm when cortisol is supposed to be up, and down, etc.. if its wacky that will show up on the test.

shenacat,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I somehow missed your poat and thought no one replied to mine.

I think the salt craving was my body looking for iodine (since I grew up in the US with iodised salt). They went away as soon as I started the iodine.

Even with the iodine, my bbt is still low (see my chart on FF, and compare it to the one from 2001), my CM stays EW or C a lot and I'm really tired. As soon as I stop the iodine for more than a day, the lump comes back. My TSH was 2.16 a few months ago, but I think I might go in and push the issue with my GP, if I can get him to talk to me about it.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

katiwren,
I have the exact same feeling of a lump in my throat. It drives me nuts! My doctor insists that there is nothing wrong but I know what I feel.
I had an ultrasound done on my thyroid, it came back normal, and so did my labs. (not sure what they were exactly..funny how doc's don't like to tell you these things.)

I agree with you on the craving for salt.. you're body is used to receiving iodine from salt, you are lacking in iodine therefore you crave the salt. It makes perfect sense.

The low body tempurature is actually a symptom of hypodthyroidism. Other symptoms include weight gain, sensitivity to cold (of course frome the low bbt), extreme fatigue.
I too have all these problems. But supposedly my thyroid is fine.
Now I did find this site from a Dr. that claim these problems could be related to having too much estrogen in your body. He says to use natural progestrone (its a cream not like Provera with supposedly has a ton of side effects!)

http://www.cyst101.com/thyroid.htm

I am not using it so I can't say how well it works or if it does at all. I am in the very beginning stages of trying to get some sort of diagnoses as to what is going on with my body.

I would say, please be careful using natural progesterone. Progesterone is a more powerful anti-spasmodic and depressent than clonazepam, and taking it without documented proof of low levels is just asking for it. Progesterone is the pre-cursor to all the other hormones, estrogen, testosterone, etc. So sometimes you take it, and your body just turns it into the bad stuff.

Besides, you only need levels of progesterone to spike during certain parts of the menstrual cycle, and unless you very closely monitor useage to mimic a normal cycle, you're not doing yourself any favors.
