Unhappy question about thyroid and other hormones

I figured somebody here might be able to help me. A friend of mine has PCOS, and her prolactin and progesterone have been raised for awhile. She's also having trouble sleeping, which might be related to low melatonin (that's just my guess?). In the tiny bit of research I did, I found several studies that discussed the link between thyroid and these other hormones. If one's low (or high), it can affect the others.

Her current doc has exhausted all of her knowledge, but she's just a GYN. I HOPE my friend will go to an endocrinologist soon. Does anybody know if other screwy hormones can be a symptom of thyroid problems?

Thanks!

Oh yes ... have they checked her thyroid? Does she have these symptoms ... feeling run down, slow, depressed, sluggish, cold, or tired and having dry skin and hair,
constipation, muscle cramps, or weight gain. Women may have an increased menstrual flow.
Some patients have a swelling in the front of the neck due to thyroid enlargement (a goiter).

Hi Viv,

Well i've been hypothyriod for the last 5 years, and for about a year or so I didn't keep an eye on how things were going, when I changed endo he wanted me to test all the things one does when they were hypo and this is what I got:

TSH - 7.98 (normal level 0.27-4.20)
FSH - 2.76
LH - 16.5
Prolattina - 1701 (normal 127 - 637)
Progesterone - 7.1
Testosterone - 0.54 (normal 0.06 - 0.82)
Theses I don't know in english - Anti tireoperossidasi - 254 (normal inf. a 34)
FT4 - 1.04

He immediately upped my doses, and 3 months after I tested and my results were like this:

TIREOTROPINA (TSH) - 2.21 mcroUI/ml (0.27 - 4.20)
PROLACTIN - 309 uIU/ml (from 80 - 635)
TIROXINA LIBERA (FT4) - 1.60 ng/dl (0.93 - 1.71)
TRIODOTIRONINA LIBERA (FT3) - 2.72 pg/ml (2.30 - 4.43)

So i think you friend should defianately visit an Endo ASAP so that they can then put her on the correct medication she needs.

I also suffer from all of the symptoms elizabeth listed, so ask your friend about those too.

Please send her my good luck and let us know how things go.

Depressed - yes (but she's had an emotionally exhausting year)...cold - I kind of remember her saying that...heavy periods - she's currently on week 8!

Thanks so much. I hope she gets to an endo soon!

Sounds very familiar here! Just give your friend the support you need, and encourage her to visit an endocrinologist. Any good one will test for thyroid and sometimes PCOS goes hand in glove with thyroid troubles, but nobody knows which one causes the other. Me personally, I was diagnosed with the thyroid BEFORE PCOS, but, the doctor was checking for PCOS and stopped when she got to the underactive thyroid. Keep at it, and she'll gets where she needs to be. You're a good friend!

If she is cold, tired and has heavy periods she could also be really low on iron. Have her ask her doctor to do some bloodwork to test for anemia. Make sure they look for ferritin as sometimes they only check the blood count and so forth instead of looking directly at the iron stores (ferritin).

If her ferritin is any lower than about 150 she is probably a little anemic and will do well with taking some good OTC iron (like SlowFE) with 1oz or more of red meat (for higher absorption because red meat triggers the iron digestive process in humans- otherwise up to 96% of the iron she takes could be lost). The general rule is to double the iron intake during your period.
