I'm a 20 year old girl, I'm not sure if I have PCOS yet (I have an appt. tomorrow with my doctor).
My symptoms include: excess dark hair growth (starting about 3 years ago(neck, chin, lip, chest/breasts, stomach...basically everywhere, haha), thin/thinning hair, overweight (most fat in stomach area, have had weight problems all my life).
This maybe is just something totally different then PCOS, but I thought I would mention something abotu PCOS to the doctor just in case. Maybe it is just a hormone/testosterone problem.
Anways, my question and advice is this:
What do you think of my symptoms, possibly PCOS?
I have a pretty regular period; do you need to have an irregular period or problems with your period to have PCOS?
And, any advice for things to tell/question the doctor about. I have previously (last year) had my blood tested for hormone problems and they said it was fine.
Really I just don't want this to happen again, where they say nothing is wrong and that's it. So maybe it's not PCOS, but there still has to be a reason for the hair and stuff right??
According to some articles on here women can have hormone problems and it not show up in lab tests. My doc DXed me by symptoms. My GYN DXed me because of classic symptoms including insulin resistance. Apparently even my hormone tests came back normal even though I'm hairy and moody, LOL.
Hi,
I hope your appt. went well! I was also diagnosed based on my symptoms. My blood tests are pretty much normal. My period was irregular, but I know some cysters do have regular periods. I was put on met even before my tests came back, because my symptoms strongly suggested to the dr. that I had PCOS. Let us know what you find out!
Good luck,
Jenny

Helamo - I am just the same too - the bloodwork came back normal, but I've got ALL the big symptoms. My doc told me that they don't really know EXACTLY how PCOS works - basically you can have all, some or one of the symptoms in any combination.
My tip is if your doctor doesn't start giving you some proper answers... find another doctor! And keep going to another one and another one until you find a decent one. Doctors are not God and they don't know everything. And some of them are downright awful. I am so lucky to have found one who finally listened to me, diagnosed me with PCOS and is helping me SOLVE the problems! Not just telling me I'm too fat and to lose weight!
Good luck with it, and if you want to talk, you can always PM me!

I think that your symptoms are quite common for women with PCOS. My doctor has told me that I have PCOS, (I am slightly overweight, I have extra hair and terrible mood swings) as well as very few cysts on my ovaries that dissapear from time to time. (!!) My period though is very regular, I have never missed one, or had a disfunction so I guess, PCOS has different symptoms for everyone.
I agree with the other girls that its very important to find a doctor that knows about PCOS and that you will be free to discuss your symptoms and how you feel.
I wish you good luck!
See you around.!!
