Ok...so I am obviously not a thin cyster. I was think once, but after high school I ballooned out. Anyway, my sister is 16 years old and thin. I told my mom the other day that I was starting to see some PCOS symptoms in her. We have determined that my mom has it also so it is very likely it will be genetically passed to both of us. Well, my mom took her to the doctor and the doctor wouldn't diagnose her for the sole reason that she wasn't overweight. He told my mom that only overweight people have PCOS. After mom told me what he said, I disagreed with him just because I am aware of you all. So, my question is when did you guys become diagnosed and on what symptoms did they diagnose you by? My sister has irregular AF, cystic acne, and getting excess hair.
i was diagnosed around 18/19 but im sure i had it longer..i never had a regular period..suffered with acne, thinning hair..facial hair..but have always been an average weight..120lbs 5"4 but i was put on bcp many years before my diagnosis so i guess u could say i was being treated around 16 or 17. i was diagnosed through blood tests..my testosterone was 3 times what it should be..and she looked at a scan i had a year prior and saw my ovaries were enlarged..and from that i was diagnosed. only recenlty have i had an internal ultrasound where i could see the string of pearls. but i deff think ur sister should get another opinion or atleast push the dr to doing some tests..

I agree that she should be tested! It took me a while to get my diagnosis, too. Though it's not as common, my doc said that lots of thin people have PCOS in one form or another. My symptom is having a constant period when not on BCP. That's it- though according to blood tests I don't ovulate. My ultrasound didn't show cysts, but lots of immature follies- isn't that the same thing? Have your sister push her doc to do both a blood test and an ultra sound. Good luck!!!

Oh how I despise docs dismissing patients with the old, "No, you don't LOOK PCOS." Argh! I have been through that crap with 1 physician, 1 gyno, 2 physician assistants. So I got the Met on my own.
Some docs think if you are not over weight and don't have a beard then you must not be PCOS. Oh, forget the fact that a patient doesn't ovulate on her own, has gained some weight and would gain more if she didn't "try" to keep it down, does have extra hair between the umbillicus and pubic area (oh, that must be heredity...gotta have that friggin beard!), and so on. Okay...lemme calm down! LOL!
I hope your sis can find a KNOWLEDGEABLE doc. It is ridiculous to have to go through a bunch of crap. Be persistant!
G/L!

I am going to suggest that my mom take her to a gyno..this was just a GP. If you look at her you can't tell because she uses a facial trimmer to trim her mustache and beard (LOL...not that bad, but you get my point) and she also uses Proactive to keep her acne under control. Even though she is thin, she has a lot of fluctuations in her weight. For instance over the summer she will gain like 20 pounds without even trying. Once she gets back in school and gets active it falls back off of her. So my point is if he would have seen her in the summer and she wouldn't have been taking care of her acne/hair it would be a totally different story. I am going to have my mom suggest that he run some blood tests. Better yet I might try to go with her. My mom isn't completely convinced she has it, but she is showing the exact same signs that I was at her age. Maybe if I were there I would push the doctor a little harder than my mom did. Thanks for all your replies. You have given me a list of things she needs to get checked. I just don't want her to have to become overweight before she gets treated.
I was diagnosed due to not getting my periods, face breaking out, excess hair, hair loss on my head, and maybe a couple more. not sure. But I've never been that overweight. I've been up to 130 (I'm only 5'0") but now I'm at a good weight again. I'll gain weight if I don't watch what I eat but I wasn't diagnosed based on being overweight. I actually did have to bring it to the doctor's attention that I thought I had PCOS. Now I wish I hadn't. I had a VERY hard time getting insurance and finally got it because I got disgusted with being turned down and just flat lied on the application and said I had no pre-exisiting conditions.

I'm new to this PCOS page. I am 5'7" 116 lb thin cyster. I was diagnosed with PCOS in Apr 2005. Not a huge surprise to me because I had infrequent/irregular cycles since I was 14. I have always been quite thin and am actually now at my heaviest weight ever. I had been on bcp for 5 years and that masked my PCOS symptoms. Before my diagnosis, I always considered myself to be lucky because I had infrequent periods and rarely had to deal with PMS symptoms. My gyn put me on bcp because with irregular estrogen cycles (i.e. irregular periods) your bones don't get the calcium they need. I have never had bad acne and only recently have experienced some hair thinning.
I went off bcp in Aug 2004 with the hopes of conceiving. No luck so far. Anyway, I don't think that I would have ever been diagnosed correctly if it had not been for the fact that my father-in-law happens to be a RE. He had me examined with ultrasound plus a myriad of blood tests to rule out thyroid problems. He then explained to me that PCOS is a complicated syndrome. He believes that PCOS is a set of symptoms caused by 3 or 4 different disorders (most of which are genetic). That would explain why there are such a variety of people and why the symptoms can vary so much.
Well I was actually diagnosed by a RE, so I don't think they would want to see her is she isn't ttc. I was actually suprised the GP even knew about it, but obviously his understanding isn't complete.
My sister and I both have PCOS, and we are both thin cysters, with irregular cycles. I have excess hair, but my sister doesn't. I get an AF every 6-8 weeks, my sister has an AF every 3-6 months. We both had ultrasounds which showed cysts on our ovaries.
If you have PCOS, there is a significance chance your sister will have it too, even through the two of you won't necessarily have all the same symtoms.
Find a new doctor, either a gyno or an endo. It would be good for your sister to find if she has pcos or not early on, so she can get what ever treatment she might need sooner rather than later.

I know what you mean by you being thin and them thinking that you can't possibly have PCOS. I am 5'7 and 118 lbs (try so hard to gain weight). I don't suffer with as many symptoms as some of these women. I just started seeing a new Endo Dr. and he recomfirmed that I do have PCOS through a blood test. At first he thought because I was so thin that I couldn't really have it, but the blood shows differently.
I would keep insisting on your sister getting tested. My sister and I are only half related, and I have it, and she doesn't. So only God knows.
Doctors can't deny you having a test done. I am sure if you through enough of a fit, they usually just do it to get you out of their hair (trust me I have done it!).
Good luck with your sister. I hope everything turns out for the best!

The trouble is that doctors tend not to regard many of the symptoms of PCOS as all that significant. Any doctor will tell you that a large proportion of their female patients shave their face at least twice a week and quite a lot shave every day. So to the doctor it's merely a "cosmetic" problem or maybe even a psychological problem because the doctor can't see what all the fuss is about. The line they tend to give is "When it comes to hair growth, there's a lot of overlap between male and female." It can be very difficult to get them to see that it's at least potentially a symptom of a much broader problem. Actually, if you use the terms "beard" and "moustache" it may be helpful in getting the doctor to pay attention.
Diagnosed after ttc for 4 months. I had fairly regular af during that time. Blood tests indicated PCOS. No hair issues, only minor acne and no cholesterol probs. Every person I mentioned it to including the ultrasound tech gave me huge suprise when I mentioned I'd be diagnosed with PCOS. It's not about the classic symptoms for thincysters. It's about hormone imbalance which causes random other problems but seemily mostly fertility issues... this is when most of us thin cysters are dx.
ThinCysters respond very well to metformin, reduced carb diets and regular exercise. I highly recommend this approach.
