I hope some of you will give me some insight into my moral dilemma and encourage me in the right direction.
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1997 by an Endocrinologist. I was not married, nor was I Catholic. I was being treated with Aldactone which helped tremendously. However, the Dr. put me on the Mini-Pill (because I was getting married and was not Catholic) and I became seriously depressed. I got off the pill and got pregnant. I was beginning my conversion and I was feeling horrible about being on the pill. To make a very long story short, I am now I am really suffering from my PCOS condition and am seeking a good Doctor. My question is this: How do you reconcile taking the pill (if you are) with your conscience? I have three children now and really want to be in good health before we have another one if that is God's plan. I hope I do not upset or offend anyone. Please help!
When I was on the pill, it was for the PCOS and not being used as contraception. I (and my Dr at the time) felt that because it was a medical reason, not contraception, it was ok to take it. I know that there are Catholics out there that are totally against the pill, no matter the reason, but that was my thoughts and feelings on it.

I have a Catholic GP who made it a point to look for an OB-GYN with a practice that knows and respects our Catholic faith. This OB-GYN does not prescribe birth control pills, especially because BCP doesn't contribute to fixing the problem. She has, instead, given me other medications (no BCP) that would treat the underlying problems and help with future conception should I want it. She's placed me on Metformin to help with the IR and the other symptoms, and progesterone troches to induce my period. Diet and exercise, in conjunction with the Metformin, would also probably help me ovulate and menstruate on my own more regularly one of these days. There are also other medications that help with hyperandrogenism that aren't BCP.
The problem with doctors is that they often just prescribe BCP to fix this problem or that, but they don't look at the whole picture. Maybe you can switch to an OB-GYN who can do that?
Anyway, for any serious doubts (because taking BCP for medical reasons is probably okay, but we can't really be sure), go to a priest whom you trust and who has continuously proven to be theologically sound and grounded. Good luck!
If it helps, I am allergic to all medications including birth control. Please read my post under Alternative Medicines. It might help with some advice.
I think all the advice given thus far is probably what you needed to hear/read. I also think that the best thing to do is to ask a priest through confession what the opinion of the Church is. As with all BCP's they risk a fertilised baby from being implanted. Thus it causes an abortion even though you don't know it. They will tell you it increases mucus and inhibits ovulation, but there is a chance you *could* ovulate and then other hormones in the pill contribute to the non-implantation.
I'm still asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten me as to if I had any babies die due to my negligence during my dumb 20's. I haven't had any dreams yet, so I'm praying all is well in that realm. I did confess, nevertheless, the fact that I was on the pill, and was forgiven.
Have a blessed day!

There are other options. Find a GOOD ORTHODOX priest. A REALLY good one.
BCPs are too often used as a band aid. Not a real cure. Just a band aid. As some of the others have said, BCPs will make your body inhospitable to a conceived child...not necessarily prevent the conception from happening in the first place. And some children, somehow, manage to survive inspite of that unwelcoming beginning (I have a friend from years ago who had three dc that way). But there is no guarantee that a child conceived by you, would be so fortunate (not trying to be mean, just point out reality).
I was only on BCPs for 2 1/2 mos of my married life--the very first 2 1/2. And my body has NEVER been the same. NEVER worked right since. BCPs are NOT a cure for anything....
Please look into some alternative that is NOT abortive.
