Question concerning the Baltimore, Maryland area...
Hi Cysters-
My sister and her soon to be husband are relocating from Portland, Oregon to the Baltimore area. It's a job transfer- and none of us have any familiarity with the area (we're from the NY area)... Can anyone recommend a town/neighborhood north of Baltimore? Thanks for any input you might be able to offer-
I have family in Ellicott City and Catonsville, both of which are nice. Anything in Howard County is great, but it's kind of expensive, not sure what price range they are looking into. Catonsville is right next to Ellicott City without the Howard County price tag since it's in Baltimore County, so it's closer to Baltimore. You might want to suggest for them to look at both but Catonsville has more older homes(in my opinion prettier because I don't find McMansions appealing, lol) and Howard County has the newer and larger homes and every time I go up there I am amazed at the construction going on. Columbia is another town that is great!!! Plus the airport BWI is located pretty close to all of those places, not like noisy close, but it's convenient.
Baltimore is nice because it's close to DC as well which is always a cool day trip!! I actually plan on moving there or northern VA when I am done with grad school. NYC and Philadelphia aren't too far away either, my family takes a train up to NYC a lot and it's only two hours away.
I've lived here all my life!!!! I grew up in the Catonsville/Woodlawn area. Although I love the Howard County/Columbia/Ellicott City area, it's not north of Baltimore. Actually, it's more Southwest of Baltimore. North of Baltimore I would suggest the Hunt Valley, Towson area near TSU, Ruxton, Rogers Forge,Lutherville, or Timonium. All of these are close to everything with really nice neighborhoods and great schools. There is a great mixture of older homes and new ones. Lots of great shopping aeas, Dr. offices, resturants ETC. also very close to the Pennsylvania State Line where you'll find many, many major outlets, if you like outlet shopping, and many historic sites.
Also, Northwest of Baltimore, is an area called Reisterstown, it's sort of like living in the country but, the city is just a few blocks away. Lots of really charming little neighborhoods there and plenty of new developemnts as well. Still a lot of open space there. Very close to most of the major attractions but off the beaten path.

My DH and I moved to Baltimore area 5 years ago from the west (Utah) for a job transfer as well. We actually ended up in Harford county in a city called Bel Air after looking at MANY areas. About 5 of my co-workers moved at the same time and all but 1 of us ended up in Harford county. It is about 20 miles north of Baltimore, so it is a little bit of a commute. I think we all ended up there because it was more "homey" to those of us used to open space and out door activities. We really enjoy it. It also tends to be a little more reasonable price-wise.
