My Mood: Points: 1,104.95 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,104.95 | Question on International Adoption I need as much feedback as possible.... here is my story/situation? My DH and I are looking into adoption since we m/c our first last July. My parents are in Thailand right now and have met a baby girl (8months)and her parents. Both parents have agreed and would love for my DH and I to adopt their girl. WOW? What do I do? Who do I contact? Is this going to be expensive? My DH and I aren't wealthy? .... my family is coming back in 2 weeks with photos and information of this little girl. The baby's mom is a related to someone in the family and that's how my mom got to know of the news.
I just don't know what steps to take ?????

I don't think that you can do this an independant adoption, b/c there is going to be so much paperwork, you are giong to need all the help you can get. Once you get that figured out then you can go from there on what you are going to need to do. Which will be the homestudy...and I haven't a clue on what the next step will be. I don't know about prices...but you can always get a loan?

I don't think there are private international adoptions & it really depends on the countries laws as to the process that you'll have to complete.
Good Luck!

Many international adoptions are private ones but they tend to be riskier. You need to make sure all paperwork is absolutely flawless.

Some countries do not allow private international adoptions. Your best resource is going to be an agency that helps place children from Thailand. www.rainbowkids.com is a great starting point.
As for finances, there are lots of resources for financing an adoption! Available Resource to Help Defray the Cost... is the most complete list I have found of financial aid for adoption.
Good luck!

Many countries do not allow private international adoptions. Your best resource is going to be an agency that helps place children from Thailand. www.rainbowkids.com is a great starting point for locating an agnecy that works with Thailand. There are also about a billion Yahoo groups for adoption...I am certain there is one for Thailand! The families on these groups tend to have the latest information and can help point you in the right direction as well.
As for finances, there are lots of resources for financing an adoption! Available Resources to Help Defray the Cost... is the most complete list I have found of financial aid for adoption. If you can't find something that won't work for you, it probably doesn't exist...seriously, this site has everything you can think of on it!
After the adoption is finalized, you will also receive a tax credit. I believe the credit is about $11,000 now, the IRS site will have the current info. While that doesn't help with the upfront cost, it certainly does help with paying it off afterwards! Some states also have financial help as well. This varies greatly by state and usually isn't very much.
Good luck!

Also find out if you will need to travel there - if so , apply for a passport, because these days it may take a long time.
Have you found an agency yet?
