Unhappy Question - Medication

Hi, my doc thinks I have PCOS becuase I have most of the symptoms, wieght problems, acne, thin hair - les hair on the scalp, ireegular periods. I know I have it. But now I know why I have thin hair, i never knew why i had thin hair, i was always upet about it, jealous that girls had nice thick hair but atleast i know why. I dont know that much abot pcos, but wanted to ask qrestions, my doc gave me some med to stop me form intaking fat from the food i eat. i have to have a ultrasound and blood test. i just wanted to ask that if i do have pcos, which i probably 99% have, will i be taking meds for the rest of my life. will the meds help prevent acne and allow my hair to grow.

also, the doc also says that if i dont change my diet and lose wieght, i may have diabetes in 5-10 years. will i have to stop eating things like chocolate, biscuts and cakes and be set on a strict health diet.

i be grateful for any help. the sad thing is, im having family problems and college problems and now i have to deal with this and im only 17.

Sorry that you are having such a rough time. The bad news is, it's likely that you will be on meds for all or most of the rest of your life. The good news is, if you get serious about the weightloss (exersize and dieting both) in conjunction with the meds (he prolly gave you metformin which makes it easier to lose weight by the way, gotta love that!), you can totally reverse the effects of the pcos. You can get thicker hair, lose the acne, be at a healthy weight, and increase your chances of conceiving when the time comes, you can even push back that date for getting diabetes, but it takes some SERIOUS changes. You have to decide if living a life free of needles and insulin, free of acne, and with healthy looking hair, and looking and feeling healthy is more important than food. It's a rough decision to make, but I'm sure you'll make the right one. If I were you, I would start small, so you want a hamburger, skip the bun and add a veggie to it. So you want pizza, fine but try to eat only one piece with the crust on it, and have two more, if you wish, but don't eat the crusts on those, only the toppings. Things like that. In conjunction with the meds it may help kickstart your metabolism and you may lose a couple lbs that way alone, which tends to motivate you to lose more. At least that's what works for me.

I know exactly how you feel - I felt the same way just days ago. I understand that you overwhelmed, I am too. I have family problems, marital problems, and I was just diagnosed with PCOS.

I find the best thing you can do is make time for you. You need to let the people in your life know that you are overwhelmed and you need time to comprehend what is going on with your body.

There is a good chance you may be on medication for life, however, it is NOT the only option! It is best to discuss all treatment options with your doctor and find the one that is best for you.

I'm having a very hard time dieting, also. I grew up in a very old-fashioned Italian home - tons of good food. I find you can enjoy the same types of food with small adjustments to make them healthier. It will take time but your health is worth it!

I found the best way to help you understand is to talk to with people who are going through the same things. You definately came to the right place!

Laila
