Question Question for PCOS sufferers...

Hi Ladies!
Before you were diagnosed, were you asked to go and have a blood test on the second day of your next period (like me)?
This is what I was told at the hospital! I came on late yesterday (21st) so I'm going to have to ring the hospital later today to have things clarified and hopefully go in. I'm fairly sure the nurse said to just go in on this 2nd day, but I'm afraid that if I just turn up, I'll be turned away or something!
I happen to have my first trans-abdominal ultra-sound scan on the 26th so both tests will be very close together (that's if I have blood taken today). I feared not having a period for ages and having to wait and wait so I'm quite please it's here in time for my scan!!

Sorry to ramble on, do you remember the question (it's just up at the top)?

Many many thanks,
Star_light

My doctor never mentioned anything about having to go on a particular day which I'm a bit annoyed about, as everyone else seems to have had to.

I just turned up at the hospital at the blood taking bit, waited in a queue for about 10 mins and gave my sample, that was it. I assume most hospitals are the same, you just turn up!

I have seen 2 specialists and both wanted to do the tests between cycle days 2 & 5. The first day of the cycle is considered to be the first day of full flow, not just spotting. I think in order to diagnose PCOS they need to perform the tests between those days. I also had to have my scan done between those days.
Make sure to turn up between days 2 & 5.

I had the following tested: Prolactin, testosterone, LH and FSH, and something else that I forgot.

Hormones looked fine, but ovaries were enlarged and polycyctic. I also have the symptoms.

Hope this helps you.

Good luck

Hi,
These are what I am being tested for aswell! I remember seeing them written at the bottom of the slip I had to give in. The nurse seemed to take quite a bit of blood compared to the last time I had to give blood. Anyway, I'm glad it's done now. She said they'd get in contact if anything was wrong. The thing is, I want to know the results EITHER WAY!! I wonder whether they'd send me some sort of copy, or send them to my doctor so I can have a look myself!?
Still, I've got my scan to look forward to! It'll be a huge relief knowing everything is out of my control.

Thanks for the replies,

P.s. I've got my first smear test (me and my mum are going together) and it's on the same day as my scan which I'm a little worried about. I might still be on my period by then
Oh well, we'll see...

My specialist didn't tell me what the exact results were, she just said my LH & FSH levels are fine. and the rest looks ok. I asked her how about my testosterone, she said that actually is quite low.but I have the symptoms and the scan indicates PCOS. I am sure I read somewhere before that the results of hormone tests change from cycle to cyle.

I believe you can get results from your specialists if you saw him/her privately. Even if they don't provide you the results, it is worth asking your GP, since the results are all sent to your GP.

Good Luck, wish you all the best.

Hi

I've never had a blood test on a specific day. I always just seem to have the tests whenever my hospital appointment is.

My blood tests have never been taken on a specific day. The consultant usually just gives me a blood test form listing the tests he wants, and tells me to have the blood tests taken a couple of weeks before my next appointment, so he has the reults in front of him when I next see him.

When I had a particular blood test that I wanted to know the results of (ooooh, split that infinitive!!), my consultants secretary faxed it to my GP and he told me over the phone. Other times, I've waited until the results have been sent to my GP by post (the consultant sends a report to my GP after each visit including blood test results), and then I've just gone into the surgery and asked the receptionist to show me the letter.

Hi
I have always had to have my blood tests on certain days - normally day 2 and day 21. Day 21 looks at the 2 levels LSH & FSH this shows if you are ovulating. So far I never have as my levels are very low. They compare day 21 to day 2.
The scan is the best way to tell though as it shows the cysts.
Let me know if you need to know anything else. We are all always about.
Take care
Tassy
