hi,

I would definitely watch my sugar levels if you're on Metformin. It has been known to cause some people to get sick and have very frequent b/m's. A mixture of low carb or lower glycemic foods in combo with Metformin is probably the best option.

You don't have to eliminate sugar, but you need to reduce it in order to keep your insulin from spiking (and as Dani indicated..keep from running to the potty). By eating high glycemic foods, you spike your insulin and counter the insulin lowering effect of the drug.

It also depends on the KIND of sugar. Glucose is the big one to watch because it makes insulin soar...but fructose and lactose don't have the same affect on insulin.

I am finding that if I follow the guidelines of the IR diet, exercise portion control, and exercise faithfully, that I can eat stuff with sugar in it with no problem, as an occasional treat. Last night for supper, I wanted dessert, so I planned for those carbs. I ate a hamburger with no bun, and broccoli with cheese sauce, so I could have a piece of bittersweet chocolate/stout bundt cake, with chocolate ganache glaze (hehehhe). Notice by far the majority of the carbs were in the dessert, and oh, yes, a modest portion of it. I also drank about a liter of water with dinner. Two hours later my blood glucose was 113, very excellent for me. My theory is that the total carbs, plus the balance of protein and fat in the entire meal, moderated the insulin spike after eating.

So for me, anyway, enjoying sweet foods is completely possible while taking glucophage. I haven't had any side effects from it at all from the start, either. Obviously, we all differ in this regard though, and should figure out what works for us.
