I got a problem
I have my first exam Tuesday. It is going to be a doozy. I made flashcards, but I find it easier to make those, all you have to do is write them out - no biggie, then actually retain the info.
Like my proorities are all wrong.
How can I study, and be able to concentrate to retain the info I need to?
I'm having a hard time concentrating.
There is a truxkload of material we need to know, 100 MC questions.
I tend to gather all the info I need and compress it into some study notes which I pour over every single free moment I have. By re-typing, re-writing and/or reading it helps me retain heaps of info. I hope that helps you

Good luck on the test Surrender...I don't have any advice that will do you good right now, but this is what I tell my kids: Study all along, read the material and review notes and listen to the lectures (if you record them) nightly. That way when a test comes up, all you have to do is review. I wish you luck on the test...

I make flash cards too and that always help me. I also have someone quiz me so I'm not tempted to look at the back. Say things outloud when you are studying alone. Hearing the information helps me to remember insead of just thinking it to myself. It might help to put things to a song or make up something to go along with it. Well hope I helped I get my first big Chemistry test back tomorrow. Good Luck!!!

Thank you so much!!
All the best to those of you on the tests you took.
Some really great ideas. I studied for about 3 hours today - a little easier, a little more info retained. I will study before I go to bed, and tomoroow in between the rest of the stuff I have to do.
Then I figure in between classes on Tuesday, again, even if I have to look at it every free minute I have, I agree.
The exam is in my Bio Psych class, about spinal nerves, the brain, neurotransmitters, action potential, IPSP's, EPSP's, meninges, anatomical directions, yada yada yada.
When i have an exam, I find that the most effective study technique for me is to read through EVERYTHING, taking very comprehensive notes along the way including all the minor details - it can take a while and i usually get at least 5pgs of notes at the end of it. then i leave it for a while (at least 6hrs - often i'll study for something else) and then go back read my notes and highlight all of the stuff that seems obsucur/unfamiliar or that i can't remember (you won't remember all of it). then after about 10mins break i write out all of the stuff i highlighted. these become my new notes. i then leave them for a couple of hours and then re-read them. eventually i get about 1/2 sides of A4 and then i transfer that onto index cards and look at them several times the night before. Any info that has to be memorised verbatim i take out and write onto a separate sheet and then keep re-writing them until i can do it without looking. Past papers if possible are also incredibly useful. then before i go to bed i read a novel/watch a movie or do anything else that will take my mind off it all.
If my exam is in the morning i won't look at any of my notes - whenever i have done, i've always blanked the info i read. the stress just eradicates my immeadiate short term memory! i just focus on relaxing - which i normally do about 10mins after getting the exam paper. if the exam is in the afternoon then i will look over some past papers during the morning if i can. basically i just try to keep myself busy.
i think the most important thing is to make sure that you feel like you have done everything possible before doing the exam so that you're not worried about all the stuff you didn't do. You don't want to be anymore stress then the exam itself causes.
above all,
GOOD LUCK!!!

Flash cards are a great idea. I always made flash cards and took them everywhere. When I had a spare minute or two out came the flash cards, at a stop light, in the dr.'s waiting room, any down time. It worked and helped me get a degree in Spanish. It also helped when I went back and studied French.
Good luck, I am sure your exams are very difficult given the subject matter. Some of my students who took Anatomy would make up songs to help them remember body parts, maybe you could do the same with the nerve endings and such.

I like flashcards as well I learned that repititon certainly helps...keep on repeating it over and over....also, writing things down help a lot....if it is in the sciences, doing the questions at the end of the textbook also help..... I wish you the best of luck....it can be so stressful sometimes! I have a microbiology test Thursday and a Biochemistry test Monday...I am nervous!
Let us know how it goes ((Hugs))

Flash cards are a good start. Depending on the type of test (architectural history for example where you have to remember names, places and dates) I would write things out over and over.
Frank Lloyd Wright, Falling Water, 1936...Frank Lloyd Wright...Falling Water..
I woud write that over and over about 20 times, then move on to the next one. Grouping things together helps too, if they're related but a little bit different get the major group and then break it down from there. Sometimes muscle memory helps just as much as regular memory Or, if you studied thing in a certain sequence, sometimes you can remeber what was before and after it just by picturing yourself writing it. Then again, maybe that's just me.
Honestly, if it's just reading, I'm terrible at skimming and scanning and not really taking it in. The more interactive it is, the more it seems to help in my case.

While in seminary my husband had tons of info to memorize verbatim (catechism questions, Greek, Hebrew, you name it). He would burn the info on a CD (now MP3 files) and play it while he commuted, did chores whatever. He would record one part of the info, leave a pause to mentally 'say' the answer, then record the 'answer' so he could confirm the information. He did flashcards, too.
