Default Question for those who adopted through DSS/the state

When adopting through child services or whatever your state calls it, did you also hire an attorney to guide you through or did you just do it on your own?

I spoke with an attorney who facilitates DSS adoptions and she said the adoption/home study is free of charge and we could do it on our own or we could pay her legal fees to have her (or another attorney) guide us.

Just wondering the pros of hiring the attorney and how costly it became.

Thanks!
Sharon

We are in the process of adopting through the state and we are doing it alone. We are only wanting to adopt children that have already had parental rights taken away. Once we are placed with a child then we will have to wait our six months then we will go for finalization and that is when we will need an attorney and we pay very minimal fees. Not sure if that helped you out or not.

We did not use an attorney as a guild but these things vary by state. I have never heard of needing one until finalization. In Oregon the finalization was paid for by the state if you picked one of "their" lawyers.

Thanks for the replies! I am tempted to go for it on our own, but I wish I knew someone in our state who went through it to ask!

We just finalized through Utah and paid a little over $1700 to the atty. We will get some of it back through reimbursement and the rest of it back with our tax return.

Best wishes to you!

I live in SC and my hubby and I are adopting through DSS. We have 2 children on our own and are adopting #3. We plan on using an attorney and DSS will pay us back what we paid the attorney.

I do know that in our state (MN) that we don't have to have a lawyer until finalization and that it is very little fee provided that you adopt through the state. The thing is you aren't very likely to get a newborn/infant through the state - at least not here!

We also looked at doing foster care but my husband has decided against it. He doesn't think he can handle getting attached and then having to let go knowing the child/teen may go back to a very horrible situation all over again!
