Default question for those who might know

hello, i am quite new here, i have visited a lot but not posted. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago - none of my doctors seem to have regarded it as anything even worth discussing with me. Most recently my new doctor (I am from UK and its a different system) when asked just told me it wasn't a big deal (in so many words.) she was kind enough to confirm it would be very hard for me to lose weight and it was linked to acne. like i didnt know that already.

Anyway - I have acne, weight problems etc - the usual i suppose. I did have terrible PMT and irregular periods but have tackled those through supplements and stopping the use of Parabens in products (I am happy to explain that if its not something familiar.)

I'll get to my question. When I was on the Pill, before diagnosis, I was still overweight. I went on Atkins and lost 20lbs and maintained that weight. When I came off the pill, i didnt have a period for nine months (hence diagnosis with PCOS) and since that time have slowly gained weight despite still working out five days a week and limiting carbs (no bread, potatoes, rice, cakes, biscuits etc etc.)

Atkins no longer seems to make any difference - i have also recently tried the Cambridge Diet and did lose some weight, but I just cannot maintain it - basically it amounts to eating only 200 cals during the day and after an hour's workout each morning I get too hungry and tired.

I am thinking of returning onto the Pill but all sites tell me that this will make me gain, not lose weight, whereas i am assuming when my body is no longer controlled by my mental hormones, Atkins might once again work for me?

Sorry this is such a long ramble, I hope it makes sense.

By the way I love this site and visit frequently to get information, since my doctors are so uninterested.

It sounds like you need to find a specialist who is a Reproductive Endocrinologist & who will write you a prescription for metformin. Metformin doesn't make me lose weight, but it does help keep me from gaining weight & making weightloss regimes much easier.

Blessings to you on your journey in finding what works for you.

BTW, welcome to SC!

Sounds like you are IR (insulin resistant) and would benefit from Metformin (Glucophage) or Avandia or one of those meds. Try to read a little bit about IR, you'll probably recognize yourself in that. Some docs can be so ignorant, but don't give up the fight! ( I just did some site searches on IR, I know there are plenty to explan it way better than I can
