2 years ago, I went to get a referral from my new PCP for an endo for the PCOS that I knew I had. He refused and said he didn't think I needed Met or any kind of treatment for the PCOS.
When he did some bloodwork, my TSH came back slightly elevated, and for THAT he gave me a referral to an endo.
When I saw the endo, he looked at all my labs and asked "What are you here for, the thyroid or the PCOS?" I was sooo happy.
So he did his own bloodwork and re-checked the TSH, which came back normal this time.
So ever since then, all the focus was on the PCOS.
For the last 2 years, I have been taking my Met religiously. My eating was kinda bad at the beginning, but I've been eating very healthy for the last couple years. I'm less active than I used to be, but it's not THAT bad.
Well anyway, the weight still goes up. Slowly, but steadily. Grrrr
I begin to wonder if maybe I AM hypothyroid... As far as I know, my endo hasn't tested again since.
Has anyone ever had this happen and STILL had an underactive thyroid?? I wonder if I should ask my endo to re-test.
Have you seen copies of your lab work? You should definitely get it re-checked and this time get copies, and compare it to what we know as "normal" levels here. Sometimes doctors use outdated information.

Oh I was way too smart to fall for that one. LOL I avoided pills like they would kill me.
I can't believe it... all this time, I could have been getting treatment. Grar. Oh well. Better late than never!
I guess this would explain why my weight still goes up (despite AWESOME eating and excercise), and why I'm so darn tired anymore. When I was younger, I was so energetic, but now I just feel lazy and tired all the time... and I'm only 23!!!
So I saw my endo yesterday and he said my thyroid levels are perfect. TSH, T3, T4, antibodies, all that good stuff. I honestly can't remember all the numbers (should have asked for copies) but I know that the TSH was 3.09.
He said that my diagnosis 10 years ago must have been a mistake, because if I was hypothyroid all this time and going without treatment, I'd be really, really sick by now.
3.09 Sounds good for TSH. A lot of docs also go by symptoms too. How do you feel?
Renee
Well, I feel fine. Sometimes tired, but that usually depends on whether or not I consume sugar... I think that's more of an IR thing for me than anything.
He said he's still going to check it every few months anyway, because the fact that I don't have a problem now doesn't mean that I never will.
Your endo is wrong. You can indeed be mildly hypo or subclinically hypo for many years without dying, hello! I was.
I always have to laugh at doctors to say "oh you'd be really sick by now". I'm hardly the picture of health! I had sleep apnea, pcos, chronic hypertension, chronic pain, morbid obesity, etc etc., and I'm only 30!!! WTH is that if not really sick?!
Plus, I feel sick if my TSH is 3+. I try to keep it around 1.5, personally.

My now ex PCP said my thyroid was "fine" at 4.86. Endo saw the same bloodwork and said "I think you're hypothyroid."
I read on here that most endos like to see TSH under 2 and my doc prefers 1.5.
When I was low-carbing, my weight was the best it ever was, and so was my TSH. Of course, I went off the dietary and financial deep end, stopped taking my meds when my co-pays doubled, and both, no doubt, have gone up.
Anyway, why be afraid of a little, tiny pill? If it helps you lose weight and feel better, why not?
