Default Questions about Gestational diabetes???

Are any of you ladies worried about getting gestational diabetes? I have my test in a couple of weeks and I am really nervous. I read that because I have PCOS and I am overweight it puts me at a higher risk. Have any of you that had babies before had gestational diabetes? I am nervous. It did not hit me until tonight. How many of you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes? What was the treatment like? How were the babies when they were born?

I would like info on this too. I just did my 1hr test this week on Tues - and im assuming i passed cause - i have not heard from them. I know before being pregnant i had the 3hr test and i failed that.

Im just wondering how that works - do you take meds - injections - or just change with diet. Its hard enough for me to eat now - i can't imagine taking away the stuff i CAN eat

I flunked the 1 hour test so badly they almost skipped the 3 hour one and sent me directly to the dietician. We were all shocked when I passed the 3 hour test with flying colors. You can't do anything to "study up" for it, so try to relax. You'll either pass or you won't.

Suggestion: Have something to eat handy for after the test. Some folks get pretty sick feeling and need to eat immediately. It's good to be prepared.

I had GD. It's scary but with discipline is VERY manageable. I met with a nutrionist and they put me on a diet plan and I very rarely had a reading out of normal range. They'll scare you saying you'll have a HUGE baby...but I controlled mine w/ diet and DS was 6 lb 14 oz.

I am very fluffy, was on 2000mg of metformin for Insulin resitance and I was GD. I passed my 1 hour GTT probably due to the metformin however I knew my sugars were bad because I had been taking them at work. When they told me I passed the 1 hour I continued to take my sugars and showed them to the dr. He added insulin to the metformin. Then after about 2-3weeks he decided to change the metformin to glyburide. I started dropping in the 40's and he thought it was the insulin but it wasnt it was the glyburide. So I ended the pregnancy on just insulin.

The dr at first did think the baby would be big. But in the end I had pre-e and I think that it was evened the babies weight out. He was 6 6.5 at 37weeks.

Some can control it with diet some cant. I couldnt. My fasting number in the morning was always good no matter if I had insulin or not. It was always my numbers after I ate that was bad.

IF you have GD towards the end of the pregnancy you will be monitored closely. I had non-stress test done every week starting at 30weeks. Then because I was becoming pre-e I started having them done 2-3x a week.

My baby did have problems keeping his sugar up after he was born for a few days. He is fine now.

Any questions just let me know or PM me

I have it this time and probably last, however, it was undiagnosed. I have only been on the diet a couple of weeks. Its not horrible, however, I have lost some weight and do tend to get hungry. I also have a big problem with my fasting numbers which appartently can't be controlled by diet. So now I am on an oral med to control it. I take it once a night and have to check my numbers 4x's a day. Hopefully, I will not have to go on insulin and oral meds will help. I also have some problems with ketones that is scary. I hope the baby will be ok. I also hope that knowing this early will help so I don't have another 9 lb baby. Sorry I couldn't be to much help as this is my 1st time.

Hi Mindy, Kathy, Cyn, and Blondie!!!! Count me in on this one too! I am so very scared. I had a urine test on Wed that indicated I have glucose/sugar in my urine. I got a call today saying my Dr. wants me to do the 1hr test tomorrow (Saturday). I did not have this problem with my DD. I did flunk the 1hr with her and the first hour of the 3hr. The 2nd and 3rd hours were great. I am so scared.

Thanks Pam, Brooke, Autumn, and Danielle for helping answer our nervous questions and helping ease our minds.

Pam-They may do me like you....The nurse said, since I am so early in my pg to be having this problem, I may have to skip the 3hr and go straight to the dietician.

blondie-I know what you mean... I am barely eating anything. I can't imagine them telling me not to eat/limit what I am able to eat let alone keep down. I have been having some severe morning sickness.

I am so scared of this. I know it's not a death sentence but I just can not get comfortable with it.

Oh! How soon after the test can you find out the results?

I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow.

Lots of luck everyone!

As far as when you get your results...I found out later on the day I took the 1 hr that I had failed and then found out the next day once I failed the 3 hr...but it probably depends on the dr and lab doing the work on you.

So if you are taking metformin you can pass the 1 hour but still actually have GD??

I am taking metformin, so will my test not be accurate?

Robyn-I'm wondering this also. I still take 1700mg Metformin. I will post my results. Are you taking the test also? When?

Some people swear that the met does not lower your blood sugar therefore you wouldnt pass it if you didnt have it.

BUT I am here to tell you that I passed it because I took my met prior to going to taking the GTT and I left there ate took my sugars and they were high. I took them 1 hour after the meal and 2 hours after the meal. All were high.

Some drs will tell you not to take the met before the test, some will tell you to take it. So do whatever your dr tells you too.

Monique - I take 1500 mgs and I will not be taking the test until 28 weeks.

Autumnleaves - I take my met in the evening, so I will not have taken it yet the day I take my test.
