Question Questions about rice

Hello girls

I love rice. Eat it almost every day. Now, can someone clarify which has the lowest GI? I have seen different contradicting statements - any ideas? Is brown rice the lowest? or basmati? i know plain white is not it, but which is the best to eat?

And what about pasta? Ive heard that dried durum wheat pasta is ok in terms of GI...

any help appreciated. Thanks!

Annie

I am sorry I don't have any answers for you but when you find out can you please let me know? I also love to eat rice but I am not a fan of the brown rice. I also have tried the low carb pasta and IMO it tastes gross. Have you tried the low carb pasta's before?

Hiya

Ive read so many contradicting things about rice! Ive read that basmati is ok, but then thats a white rice, and other places say white rice is a no-no...am trying to eat brown rice and its ok, but not great. Have tried low carb pastas and they seem ok, but a bit crumblier than normal pasta. I cannot eat wholewheat pasta, its not very nice at all! That said, ive also seen that durum wheat pasta is ok!! argh!
Ive decided to fork out and go and see a nutitionist - that is in a couple of weeks so hopefully will have some answers then!

I'm torn about the rice myself.

About pasta - I've tried a pasta made of brown rice and it wasn't half bad. But, in terms of GI it's probably higher than plain ole brown rice.

I also like to replace rice with kasha (which I admit is an acquired taste) or bulgar wheat which is nice, especially if you need something to soak up a yummy gravy.

I've read in a couple places that Basmatti rice is really high on the glycemic index.

I follow Sugar Busters, and the only rice allowed is brown basmati. Any white rice is a no-no, and most browns have a higher glycemic load than this one.

I had to try several brands before I found one (a store brand) that works. Mostly, you just have to add extra water and cook it longer, then it's not as chewy.

I have heard that brown rice is best - not sure if that is regular brown rice, or brown basmati.

Brown rice of any type is chewier than white, so you have to get used to the texture.

I've been experimenting with other grains. Quinoa (Keen-wa) is a very high protein grain that is pretty good. I also use barley to make pilafs sometimes.

from the books I have on GI foods it seems to state Basmati rice is the lowest. Sometimes this GI thing can be a bit confusing.

For those who follow along with the glycemic index (a measurement of the type or quality of carbs in a particular food, and how fast 50 grams of this carbohydrate raises blood glucose levels, (and consequent insulin secretion and effects produced by the pancreas) as it is digested.), it's 58 for basmati rice.

If you follow the glycemic load (While the glycemic index classifies foods according to how fast 50g of carbs in them raises our blood glucose levels, Glycemic Load indicates how fast a standard portion of a particular food (like Basmati Rice) raises blood glucose, and thus gives an indication of glycemic and insulin response.), it's 22.

Now, according to this site, the GI of long grain white rice is 56, short grain white rice is 72, and converted rice is 44, while brown rice is 55.

The glycemic load of white rice is 23. Brown rice is 16.

So basmati really doesn't seem to be much better than any other white rice. I couldn't find the stats for brown basmati.
