Can you still have a baby after weight loss surgery? The reason I'm condsidering it is cause....... I'm doing Weight Watchers and working out. And not lost any weight in the past month. I'm doing all this with a buddy and she's already lost 10lbs in the past 2 1/2 weeks! I'm going nuts! My dr. offered weight loss surgery a couple months ago. But I turned it down cause one of the ladies in our church had just passed away from after getting her weight loss surgery. So I was a scared to even consider it. Thanks for you time everyone!
There are pro's and con's to any surgery as well as possible complications. YOU are the only one that knows what you think is right for you. You have to decided if the benefits outweigh the possible complications. For me it was worth it. Sorry, that wasn't your question. The answer to your question is YES! Most definetly. In fact several of the ladies on these boards who've had WLS in the past few years have had babies. Some have had more than 1. Good luck with your decision!

There are various weightloss surgeries out there & each one has different pro's/con's. I could say alot but check out the thread i started with my WLS story & you can get my details.
I would have to say research each surgery & determine if its something your interested in or not.

Hi there Koolmama! I'm proof that you can have babies after WLS! I was unable to concieve prior to my WLS (I had the RNY) and have been able to get pregnant 2x both the 1st month trying after surgery. I had healthy pregnancies & healthy babies! Unfortunately there are potential complications with WLS (in extreme cases death) but many of those complications are due to 2 thing...one being the patients health at the time of surgery. Most times the people having WLS have multiple health issues which put them in a greater risk category for any kind of surgery. The second is post op...and most times is patient fault such as not taking vitamins and stuff like that. Of course there are some complications that can arise out of surgery like strictures but those are easily treated with a scope & dilation of the stoma via balloon.
Anyway if you have questions about WLS & Pregnancy specifically I'll do my best to answer them!
Good luck!

Yes! I am pregnant with my 3rd post-op baby! I tried for 4 years before my surgery to get pregnant and couldn't. Since surgery I get pregnant VERY easily. My pregnancies have all been smooth and uncomplicated. I had the gastric bypass RNY and it really was the best decision I've ever made.

I honestly dont know what to do! I've been trying to lose weight for almost 3 years now. I've done everything (but pills) you can think of. My parents keep telling me I'm not trying hard enough. I have changed the way I eat I walk/jog atleast 4 times a week! I'm going back home this summer and would really like to fit in the airplan set without being uncomfortable! Not only do I want to feel healthy and good we also want to have another baby. What are the cons to WLS?
Cons to WLS are mostly potential complications that can arise such as vitamin deficiency, vomiting, diarrhea, dumping syndrome (a hypoglycemic reaction to sugar/fats), stricture, bowel obstruction, and in extreme cases death. Some people have a few of these complications, others like me are complication free (ok...I do dump but as long as I keep under my 10g of sugar I'm fine). Have you checked out the WLS FAQ at the top of the page?

Wow That's a lot of info! Thank you its very helpful What made your finally say ok I'm just going to have WLS? What stops me is my parents. They are scared something will happen to me and I have 2 kids and a husband. They think that maybe I'm not trying hard enough...... I dont know what to do. My dr. says I really should do it but my family says no..... My husband doesnt like the idea but will support me no matter what I do. I'm lost and beyond ready to get rid of my extra poundage!
Regardless of your decision you have to either do it for you or not do it for you. You can't do it because your doc wants you to just as you can't NOT do it because your family is afraid of the potential consequences. Also take into thought of where your life will be if you don't have the surgery. Will you develop diabetes or have your diabetes get worse (if you already have it)? How will your blood pressure be? Cholesterol? Body pain? Sleep apnea? For many people who opt to have surgery it's not just to 'cure' these ailements but also to prevent them from happening and improve their overall quality of life. Quite possibly your family has heard horror story after horror story and are not as educated as they could be. Do your research and educate them if you choose to go through with surgery. Have them attend an informational seminar and surgery support groups with you so that they can see first hand that the majority of post ops are healthy and have little to no complications. Just a few thoughts. And of course if you have questions about it...ask us here on the boards or on the WLS Divas thread...we'll be happy to answer!
