Default questions about wls newbie sorry

Hey Ladies,

Let me give you a run down quickly about me...

Im 28yrs. I have been through all the fertility treatments including IVF.. No pregnancy was achieved not even close. I weigh 264 at 5"0 and have all co mobid disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, PCOS, Hair, you name it I got it... I have went through all the classes for weight loss surgery and just waiting to hear back if I qualified for it. I was thinking of doing the RY surgery because Im afraid I have waited to long to have the surgery and I don't want to not have the chances of getting preggers...

So my questions is:

Am I to old to have the surgery in order to get pregnant? How long did you wait to get pregnant and was pregnancy harder then if you didn't have the surgery. What did you do to avoid getting low sugar? If you did get low sugar how did you get it back up? When you get the dumping how long does it last? Do any of you feel you should have picked a different type of surgery over the other?

Hey Jen. I answered your question on my thingie but I'll answer again here...

Am I to old to have the surgery in order to get pregnant? You are NOT too old to have WLS. I was 3 weeks shy of turning 28 when I had mine done. How long did you wait to get pregnant and was pregnancy harder then if you didn't have the surgery. I waited a year before getting pregnant. Technically I waited 16m although I was given the clear at 12m. I was on a medication that I couldn't get pregnant taking so once I finished that it was on to getting pregnant. And to our surprise we got pregnant the 1st month trying. I didn't have any babies pre op so I can't compare but I can say that I'd gone through 8 years of failed fertility treatments prior to my WLS. What did you do to avoid getting low sugar? Eat something small every few hours. If you feel yourself really getting hypoglycemic drink a little fruit juice. If you did get low sugar how did you get it back up? Drink a little fruit juice...enters the blood stream fast. When you get the dumping how long does it last? Dumping depends on how much you went over your sugar tolerance. I have a 10 gram limit to sugar. If I hit around 10g...it will be very mild & tolerable and might last 15-20 minutes. If I go way over and dump hard then it can last an hour or more. I don't vomit or get diarrhea with dumping. Dumping for me is stomach upset/nausea, hot flash, dizziness, FATIGUE! (if I mildly dump I'll get a little tired...on a hard dump I'll crash out cold for up to 4 hrs), heart palpitations/heart racing. Do any of you feel you should have picked a different type of surgery over the other? For me the RNY was the best choice. The VSG wasn't available when I had surgery, the DS was too much malabsorption and the Lapband was too much maintenance for me...I love my RNY and it's been the best fit for me.

Am I to old to have the surgery in order to get pregnant? I hope not. I just had my one year post op appointment and my doctor gave me the green light to TTC and I am 34.

How long did you wait to get pregnant and was pregnancy harder then if you didn't have the surgery. My surgeon told me to wait 12 - 18 months.

What did you do to avoid getting low sugar? If you did get low sugar how did you get it back up? You might want to research the duodenal switch and its cure rate for type II diabetes

When you get the dumping how long does it last? I don't dump

Do any of you feel you should have picked a different type of surgery over the other? Never! I my switch. WLS is a very personal decision and one you should not take lightly. You need to do a lot of research and pick one that YOU can live with for the rest of your life.
