I'm a newbie here on the forum, but not a newbie when it comes to PCOS. I was diagnosed in 2005. I was put on Meteformin "Glucophage" XR 500mg twiced a day. With that I lost 40lbs. along with the help of diet and working out to. I lost 17lbs. in the first 3 weeks. To me that was wow. So .. I lost the weight and they took me off the medication. Over a year and a half later I've put all my weight back on.
I went back to my Gyno and she put me on Meteformin HCL. I'm assuming it's a lot differant because I dieted for 2 months hardcore and didn't lose a single pound *tear, tear*. I went back to my Gyno again... She's going to put me either back on the Meteformin XR or something else. I'm also on Synthroid 25mgs a day for my thyroid problem. So with PCOS and THYROID problems it's sort of a tripple wammy with weight loss.
I'm extremely depressed and I need someone to relate to. I'm so tired all the time. I lost weight the first time and I know I can do it again, but the scale it's moving... I'm gaining weight though instead of losing it. My hair is thinning and my skin is horrible.
I'm 18 years old. I should be living my life to the fullest, but instead this disease is holding me down.
Has anyone been switched from these to medications Meteformin HCL and Meteformin XR "Extended Release" ?
Any information or similiar exeriances would be greatly helpfull.
Hi! I'm on the extended release and it's a lot easier on my system. I also saw a nutritionist and it is a huge help. Helped with hair loss and skin quality and also my mood. She put me on a low glycemic diet and vitamins to balance me out and supplement where I had deficiencies. I also am hypothyroid so I understand that it is in fact very hard to lose weight, but it is very possible. I lost 87 lbs with her, but I also had to work out five days a week, an hour at least of cardio and then some strength training. And it was hard at first to get in the habit of eating right and working out. But start slow on the working out, maybe try doing an half hour walk three days a week for the first week and then build up to an hour three days a week and then go from there. I was a geek and put a sticker on my calendar every day that I worked out, it was a visual reminder and congratulations to myself that I made my goals. Also when I reached my goals for the week I did something nice for myself like a movie(brought my own snacks), a bubble bath, a new book or a new shirt to workout in. To give you a basic idea of what I ate it was important to balance things out, lots of veg, a hands portion of protein and very little carbs, but when I did have carbs it was complex. Like quinoa and brown rice. No sugar, no sugar replacements (like splenda). I use Agave, it's a natural sweetner that is low glycemic. Your life will be wonderful, don't let this get you down. It's a pain I know but you have more power against it than you know. Get angry at it and fight back. When you see your dr next ask about a nutritionist that knows about PCOS or diabetes (you didn't say if you had the insulin resistance or not but a nutritionist that knows about diabetes can also help with insulin resistance that is not to the point of being diabetes). Ask the nutritionist for a detailed food list and for supplements that may help. Also you could check out a licensed accupuncturist to help balance your hormones. Hang in there and take care of yourself, you are worth it!
The XR works better for me than the regular. I do not have the horrible side effects that always just made me need to eat more food. On the XR I actually seem to be full faster.
Good luck and welcome to SCs.

I was on the XR for a while, but for some reason here a 30 day supply of only 1000mg a day runs about $150! Where as normal Metformin for me is $8 for a month supply on 2000mg a day. My doctor told me the only real difference with this from normal Metformin is it's basically a 1000mg dose in one pill.
I've heard some say the side effects are easier to tolerate on the XR but for me it just took a while, and I had to learn how to eat to avoid being sick on it.
I have lost my weight on dieting only and I think the metformin helps. I do not think your doctor should have taken you off your met if you were still IR or was diagnosed with PCOS.
