Sorry it took my a while to reply. Yes, I'm quite busy now with Zach. I'd be more than happy to answer your questions.
1. Did you get any immunizations before you went?
we didn't get any immunizations before our trip. Hep A & B were suggested, but we didn't take them, and both DH and I were fine.
2. Did you take any medications with you - to ward off anything?
I took Imodium AD, and some pain relievers. I would suggest getting your doctor to give you some prescription medicine for any upset stomach. I used the Imodium I had, but then had to get my DR. to give me something stronger when I got home because the Imodium didn't work very well. If I ever go back, I'll make sure I have prescription meds.
3. Do you know why you got sick? Do you think you drank bad water or anything?
I was fine most of the time in Guatemala, and ate anything I wanted. I didn't use the water though. We even used bottled water to brush our teeth. I ate a sandwich (room service) one night, and it had mayo on it. Mayo makes me sick at home, and I think that is what made me sick in Guatemala. After I got one big bite of the mayo, I threw the sandwich away. (it didn't even taste right) So, the next day was when I started having problems.
4. It looks like (in one of your pictures) you took a stroller with you. Is that right? Did you take a car seat or anything for the plane ride or for taxi rides?
I didn't take a stroller or car seat. The Radisson has a stroller available in each of the rooms on the family floor, so we used that one. As for rides, it sounds terrible, but you just hold onto the baby very tight. There are no seat belts most of the time.
5. Did you take gifts for your foster mother? What do you suggest?
I took gifts for the foster mom, her 2 girls, her husband, the facilitator, and the attorney. For the foster mom, I took some nice bath towels, wash rags, baby clothes, diapers, and a set of 4 smell good lotion, soap, etc. For her husband and the facilitator (who was a man), I took a watch. (one of those rugged looking ones from Kmart) For the 2 girls, I took them each 2 Barbies, and each a wardrobe of clothes. For the attorney, I got another set of 4 smell good products. I probably spent around $100 to $150 total. I had bought a rosary for the Foster Mom, but found out she was not Catholic, so I didn't give it to her, but that would be a nice gift. Another idea, if you are getting gifts for any men, is a ball cap from your state team, or a t-shirt.
6. Do you speak Spanish? Is not knowing Spanish going to be a problem for me?
I took Spanish in high school, but don't speak it. I know a few words, but not enough to really do me much good. It was not a problem. If someone started speaking Spanish to me, I would tell them, "no habla espanol" (meaning I don't speak Spanish). Then they would either speak English or tell me "no hablo ingles" (I don't speak English) About the only ones I came across that didn't speak any English were the cab drivers. If I needed a taxi, I just had someone at the front desk of the hotel, call a cab for me. That way they could tell them in Spanish where I needed to go. Don't worry you should be just fine.
Best of luck to you, and I hope your case starts moving really soon. If your DNA is being done through LabCorp in NC, you can call and ask for Tracy. She was able to tell me when the test had been done, and when they expected to have results.
Keep me posted,
