I was just diagnosed with PCOS and IR. I am twenty-three years old and overweight. I am 5'2 and weight about 150 Ibs. I had a couple of questions.
I was reading about Metformin, and my current doctor says that he doesn't prescribe it because he doesn't feel like the benefit outweighs the risks and there has been no long term benefit shown. But another endocrynologists told me that she would recommend that I take it and it could induce periods and help me lose weight (which has been a battle for a while). Should I find a new doctor? everything i have read about it sounds good, but any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is there a link between PCOS and IR and depression? I have been treated for depression for a while, and i was wondering if there were any relationship between the two, or if Metformin or other hormonal drugs might imrove my mood. I saw the link on depression, which was very helpful, but I was wondering if there was any additional advice about this.
And, finally, the weight loss issue. I have been trying for the last year and a half to lose weight with no success, and it is making me less likely to eat well and work out because nothing seems to work. Any specific advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all for the advice. THis website was recommended by my doctor and has already been very helpful.

Welcome to SC!
I just want to tell you that with PCOS the road can be long and hard, but the struggle is worth every minute. We tend to strength our relationships with family and friends knowing that life is precious gift.
The depression note: I've noticed that some PCOS'ers have struggles with depression, but that doesn't mean that PCOS causes depression. If you do feel your struggling with depression make sure you talk to someone and seek help.
As for the Met note: I haven't personally ever taken Met. I have alot of friends on SC that have taken it and it has really helped them. I advise alot of research to bring to your doctor, which should help you take a more active role with PCOS.
I just thought I'd give you a few heads up. If you have any questions...feel free to PM me or flag me down. I'd be more than glad to help you out any way that I can.

Welcome Fromthebay,
I think you could have written my profile!!! I too have PCOS and IR. 23 5'5" and 185! I've actually have been taking metformin for about 20months now and i havent had a period or had any significant weight loss but my blood sugar is normal and now that i'm low carbing the weight is coming off much easier (i would attribute it partly to the met.) I'm doing Atkins and i feel so much better and my mood has drastically improved. I dont know if its because i'm so happy that i'm losing weight now FINALLY or what but its like a weight has been lifted off of me. Anywho good luck and let me know if i can be of any help!
