Default Questions On Pcos

Good Morning Everyone.
I am new to this forum and I have PCOS. I have had it now for about 8 years and just found out a little over a year ago(my dr forgot to mention it to me). I was looking for some answers on what I should do in my case. I have three beautiful children and do not plan on having anymore. Some people told me I should just have a hysterectomy because of the problems I've been having. I have alot of the symptoms and some are real embarrasing. I have an excess amount of facial hair and body hair. I have dark patches on my neck, i am very over weight (by 90 pounds) and I can't seem to lose any weight no matter what I do. I seem to gain slowly over the course of a year and I have tried everything. The problem I am having with trying to get this treated is I do not have any health insurance. My husband is the only source of income, and with three small children, I can't afford to try all the different treatments. So by getting a hysterectomy I will know how much it will cost and I can make monthly payments. Does this sound like the thing I should do?? Any answers will be appreciated.

Hi and Welcome!

Personally I wouldn't go for the hysterectomy, because there are other ways to go about getting PCOS under control, without doing through major surgery. There are many success stories regarding diet and exercise.

I seem to recall one of the cysters on the site posting about pros and cons of hysterectomies, but can't remember where. In any case, this will give your post a bounce and you might want to post the question on the subject line of the post, which will probably get you more answers.

A hysterectomy will not "get rid" of PCOS. Polycystic ovaries is a possible symptom, not the cause, of this disease. PCOS is an endocrinological disease having to do with hormones and insulin.

You may want to get checked to see if you are IR (insulin resistent). You may find taking something like metformin may reverse the effects of PCOS.

Do some research on the stickys from the various forums. You will find some really great info.

I'm gonna stop looking back and starting moving on
And learn how to face my fears
Love with all of my heart, make my mark
I wanna leave something here
Go out on a ledge, without any net
That's what I'm gonna be about
Yeah, I wanna be running
When the sand runs out
