Unhappy Questions re: Colposcopy w/biobsi & Gynocologic Oncologist

Where to start?

1) I had a papsmear in October that was fine, now in March it was abnormal. So yesterday my gyno did a colposcopy and biopsi. Has anyone else had that done after only 1 abnormal pap smear?

2) I've had 2 ultrasounds over the past 7 weeks that show a small ovarian tumor on my left ovary - it appears to be a dermoid cyst. My gyno has referred me to a Gynocologic Oncologist. For those of you who've had ovarian dermoid cysts removed - did you see an Oncologist first? (My friend who's a nurse reacted to this - hadn't heard of this before) Also, did you have laprascopy or laparotomy, and how long was your recovery?

I'm sure that I'm fine, but I have to admit that I have a hard time concentrating on my daily tasks - my mind keeps coming back to this. And I feel like people don't really understand my fear, it's a common thing to have dermoid cysts and it's nothing to worry about.

Hmmfp..

OK, enough whining and complaining. Let the comments and/or questions start rolling! :p

I don't have any information to offer about the cyst, sorry, but I have had several colposcopies.

03/02 first abnormal pap
05/02 colposcopy w/biopsies ~ moderate dysplasia
09/02 cryosurgery to freeze 3 dime to quarter size spots
03/03 ab.pap, colposcopy w/biopsy~ mild dysplasia one dime size spot left
09/03 ab. pap,colposcopy w/biopsy~ no change
12/03 bfp
01/04 abnormal pap at first prenatal visit.
02/04 colposcopy no biopsy, said same as noted in records
04/04 pap, I'm sure it will be abnormal and another colposcopy.
They said they will do one every two months while I'm pregnant.

Try not to worry too much, I know it's hard when you think of every possibility. The good thing is to do things early, that way if there IS a problem it can be treated promptly. I freaked out the first time and the one after the freezing ( he said 97% chance of it being gone, ha!) HTH some, long winded I know.

Good luck
Kristina

I have had the colposcopy 2 times in the past year. I can tell you it is a bit uncomfortable. There is a bit of cramping and you bleed lightly for the next few days. You will have to use a pad and no sex for a bit... Maybe you can take some tylenol before you go and then it might be a bit better. Mine have both come back o.k.. Good luck and I hope everything is fine with both things....

I worked in an OB/GYN office- depending on what the level the pap smear came back as and if hpv neg or positive, we did a colposcopy if warranted.

As far as dermoid cysts- he removed them w/o referring to an oncologist.

Cool Thanks!

Thanks for all of your kinds words of encouragement!

I had abnormal papsmears for about 4 years, until they decided to do whatever it is they do when they remove the outer tip of cervix. This was 10 years ago and I've been fine ever since.

Things have changed a lot since then - back then they didn't do a biopsi until I'd had several abnormal papsmears (I had them done every 3 months).

Anyway - I'd rather be safe than sorry!

A wonderful weekend to you all!

Default dermoid cyst

I was told by my Dr last Friday that I had a dermoid cyst (or tumor of the tissue, as he explained it) on my left ovary. I know it's been there for quite some time, because any Dr. that has ever done a pap smear on me said my left ovary was quite "enlarged". I've had sonograms before, but all were done externally. Thurdsday I had a transvaginal ultrasound and that's how they discovered it. I go for a MRI of my pelvis this Thursday and if it is confirmed to be a tumor (which can very likely be noncancerous), he will refer me to a gynelogical oncologist. I believe this is because they are the most familiar w/ these type of removals/operations..... Have you had any further testing on this or an outcome..... my mind is constantly wandering as well..... (as it is now, cause I'm at work with plenty to do. Instead I am searching the internet for info!).

HTH and look forward to your reply.

Regards,

Calisa C. Wood

I had an abnormal pap at my first gyno appointment when I got pregnant. Had a coposcopy with biopsi and it returned as severe dysplasia. Had paps every other month through pregnancy. At 6 week checkup had coposcopy with biopsi and it returned as cancer. Had a conization and it was microinvasive cancer. Had paps every three months then tapered to 6 months at my comfort level. Now go every year. Have not had another problem.

Hope this does not scare you. When they said the word cancer I was so scared but everything turned out okay.

Default *phew* Dermoid Cyst removed!

When I had my initial visit with the gynecologic oncologist, he looked at the UltraSound reports and asked why I was there. He was surprised that my gyne had referred me to him for what 2 ultrasounds indicated to be a small dermoid cyst.

Anyway - he removed the cyst laprascopic last Monday and I'm supposed to call him tomorrow to get the results of the biopsi of the cyst. Then I go see him the week after for post-op exam.

The colposcopy and biobsi of the abnormal papsmear showed moderate dysplasia (abnormal cells cover 2/3 of the wall) and my gyne wants to "scrape" as soon as I've recovered from my surgery.

Calisa - try not to worry too much, I'm sure everything will be fine. Feel free to msg me with any questions.

Thanks for your update Renae. I am in wait of the results of the pelvic MRI....so have yet to find out what will be next. I am glad things worked out well for you so far. Good luck with the rest.

Default ..just a quick update

My surgeon called and said the biopsy showed it was a dermoid cyst and that it was benign.

That's great news, all tho I really wasn't very nervous of it being anything else.
