My dr tested me for this and I was just curious as to what it is and what I might look for. I didn't get to ask about it yet.....but I will probably ask when I get my results back......Please anyone know??

Yes, thats how I understand cortisol too. It's the 'flight or fright ' hormone.
My cortisol is high - so I have locah - late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia as well as pcos.

But check this out... http://www.labtestsonline.org/unders...ol/glance.html
..It's not VERY helpful, but it's something. My dr keeps telling me not to get stressed.. that stress is bad and keeps me from losing weight (not just cuz i wanna eat either)... so.. I wonder... |

My Mood: Points: 9,982.66 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 9,982.66 | Often when a doctor suspects a woman has PCOS her symptoms are similar to a condition called Cushings disease, which is abnormally high cortisol levels caused by a pituitary tumor. They give us a blood or urine test to rule out cushings when diagnosing PCOS. I also think there is some reference somewhere to PCOS sometimes being associated with a little bit higher than average cortisol level, but I cannot remember where I read that or what it was about. My blood cortisol is 19 with 21 or so being the mark where they know for sure that there is a problem. My doc checks it again once in a while. Hope this helps -LB

My Mood: Points: 1,362.59 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,362.59 | Just like adrenaline is the short term stress hormone, cortisol is the long term stress hormone. Here's how I look at it. Your body is not designed to worry about all the societal stuff we worry about now. It's designed to worry about food, shelter, and procreation. If you're not getting enough food and shelter it's not going to allow you to procreate, because you might not be healthy enough to raise a baby. Our biology doesn't know about modern life. It knows you're worried, and so must be starving, or something serious like that. Cortisol is produced during times of worry, which is why we gain weight more when we are worried and stressed. It not only stimulates appetite, making nearly impossible to not eat when food is so accessible in our society, but it also stimulates fat production so that what you do eat gets stored as fat. That way, your body thinks, if the food runs out you'll at least have some fat stores to fall back on. Which brings be back to PCOS and babies. The hormone imbalances are meant, I believe, to be a good thing, so you don't kill yourself having a baby if you are already starving on your own, or something like that. Biology just hasn't caught up to how society works--we're always stressed, we can't exercise or sleep enough, and we eat all the wrong stuff. So we're stuck with hormone imbalances that make it difficult to have babies even though staying alive isn't really the issue anymore.
