Default A quick question about spiro and monitoring

Hi,

Just a quick question for anyone that's been prescribed spiro; how frequently were you monitored at the start of your treatment, and what sort of things was the doctor monitoring?

Also, I've just been prescribed 100mg of spiro, mainly for acne and hair loss, and started two days ago. as yet, i've not felt any different, except for being more thirsty. just wondered if anyone suffered any adverse side effects, and if so, when they kicked in?

Thanks so much!

hi

first off, welcome to sc Ive been on spiro about 5 half years. At first it made my periods more irregular , but they went back to my normal. My endo said it takes 9-12 months to get to maximum result, i take 100 per day too. I get blood tests done about twice in a year.

right now, i'm on 100mg of spiro (50mg in the morning and 50mg in the evening) and i've been taking it for almost 5 weeks now. i haven't really been monitored yet but i'll be going back to my endo wednesday next week for blood work and to possibly up my dose to 200mg. i was also told that if i don't see any results after 6 months, it just won't work for me and there's no need to keep taking it, but it could take a few months to see any noticable change.

i don't have side effects at all from the spiro that i can notice. i don't think it has messed with my period at all. without met, i don't get a period and i'm taking 2000mg of met with the spiro and i got a period last week or so. and I can honestly say in the nearly 5 weeks, my upper lip hair has changed color or gotten thinner or something, because i'm not plucking nearly as much as i did. on my neck, under my chin, i'm still plucking and shaving though. not sure about between my breasts...i just plucked there and nothing coming back yet. the hair on my head...i'm not sure about either. i still have alot of hairs hanging on to the brush.

I've been on spiro since April 06... 50mg per day to start then incrementally up to 200mg per day from October. I'm removing excess hair less than half as much as I did and have far less acne. Compared to what I had when I started it's achieved a small miracle.

It took about two months to start to notice a difference and even then it was gradual but ever so welcome. It did change my periods but then so did metformin. When I have one it's lighter and shorter which I don't mind at all. As well as having PCOS I'm a DES daughter and for me the combination of the two would make conceiving and achieving a full term pregnancy virtually impossible so I've decided not to try to have children.

It's worth noting that spiro is a diuretic and you should make sure that you are drinking an adequate amount of water every day. I find that I can get dehydrated very easily and I now keep a bottle of water with me when I'm out.
