Default Quick Question On Provera...

Well let me start off by saying that I have had my period for aproximately 4 weeks so I finally decided to go to the gyno to find out what is going on.

He tells me that he doesn't really know why I am bleeding so much and for so long. He visits me down there and again he tells me that he doesn't really know why but it can be a couple of things...1. it is because of my hormones and 2. it might be a miscarriage. I personally doubt that is was a miscarriage so I just take in what he tells me and I ask him if he can stop the bleeding because I have had enough.

So he give me a perscription for provera. Now here is where my question comes in....I know that provera is given to bring on a period but can it help to stop a period? He told me to take 2 a day for 1 week.

So does anyone now anything on this? Will it stop the bleeding or am I gonna still suffer???

Thanks in advance!!!

The Provera should stop the bleeding while you are taking the med. It is progesterone. The way your cycle works (or should work if we weren't cursed with stupid PCOS)...is that your progesterone levels build up to a certain point. When it gets to that point, you ovulate. If you don't get pg, then your progesterone levels drop off and that signals the lining to shed. If you get pg, your progesterone levels contine to increase.

So...it's probably that your lining is not getting the chance to buld up so it is never getting to completely shed, so it just keeps going and going and going...

So..the provera will raise your progesterone levels enough to stop the bleeding. This will give your body a chance to actually build up a lining. Then when you stop the provera, you should get a period that lasts somewhat of a normal time frame (might be a couple weeks...just depends). There is no guarantee that the bleeding wont continue, but it's a pretty quick and inexpensive way to stop the bleeding for now. Chances are that you should get some relief from the bleeding. Hopefully, it will work for the long term. Only time will tell. Good luck.
