Also, do you have to have a lot of savings? We've pretty much used ours doing infertility stuff.
Thanks!

I'm from California so may be alot of differences. On top of what was already mentioned they wanted to know if you had any bankruptcies, repos etc. We did not have any savings, but we had good credit and always paid our bills, mostly on time (very few had ever been late). They asked for us to recommend three friends who could write references for us and they sent them questionairres. I only really remember one question asking if the friend would ever consider us to raise their children if something happened to them. I remember this because one of our friends said no. Only because of different religious backgrounds. We also had to write detailed biographies and answer many questions that were very personal. In my original group of 10 couples I think 3 backed out before we were finished with homestudies, but it is worth it if you can get past feeling they want to know too much.

I read alot of your post and I would have to say going through our Home study was great. All we had to do was feel out a paper about us.. Like you said how would we discipline and how we were growing up. A Social worker came to our home and checked us out ask us questions about us and what we were like. How would we raise our son ect. We already had our son in our home with temporary custody before they did the Home study. They came to see us interact with him, of couse he was only about a month old when they did. They didn't ask about money except on how much we made and that I was going to be a stay at home mom. That we went to chruch and would raise him with those values. That was it. Then we had to have 3 people who was not related to us write up something on our character. That was it and it was thru and done. Then they apointed the court with their results. That was it we were done ect.. The reason why we had our son before this happened he was born Jan 25th 2002 and the day he was born we appointed the court with getting temporary custody the same day he was born. The judge granted it. I give praise to our Lord for the way it went. Thought I would share a little about this. God bless you and I pray things have worked out for you as well. Let us know.

I did some calling around. Geez it was gonna cost us like 1100-2500 dollars and we found a woman that used to work for DCFS that was certified that did ours for 350.00. It paid off for us to call around for ourselves.
I know we borrowed from our 401k & income taxes help a lot to
But there is many ways to come up with ways to pay for things
Good luck

The state did our Home study and it was 250.00 and lawyer fees were 2500.00 dollars and when the final day came to make it leagal we probably put out about another 80.00 dollars.
That was it.. I agree with Lisa there are alot of ways to get the money, just open up all the options and do what is best for your finances..
