Default Quit Metformin

I am curious, if you lose enough weight, can you quit taking Metformin? Also, how do users keep from having diarrhea with Met? I am fed up with it

I took Met for about three years, and then opted to go off of it due to stomach issues. In spite of a reasonable eating plan (no different from when I was on Met), I gained back about 20 of 30 lbs I'd lost on Met. I went back on it. I have since gotten to a total weight loss of 35 lbs over when I started Met (the first time). I found out my stomach issues were actually IBS, not the Met.
In my humble, non medical opinion, the Insulin Resistance comes back when you go off Met, which thows your body back into the turmoil it had before.
Best of luck with what you decide

It depends on the person. Some folks can alter their lifestyle (diet, exercise) enough to manage their hormones, but it depends on things like genes, how hard their hormones are to move, past history, etc

I have been able to lower my dose of met by 1/3, but thanks to a high prevelence of Type 2 and insulin issues in my family and hormones that are really hard to move, plus the fact that I started having insulin issues when i was a teen and thin, I can't discontinue it, even though I am at my goal weight, run 3 times a week and bike and eat on the IR diet.

It is an individual choice, but studies are showing it safe long-term treatment..you just need to do some trial and error to see what will manage your individual hormones.

Good luck!

For me, diet was the number one thing that affected this. I had side effects for over a year on met and I refused to alter my diet. When i started doing some reading on the affect of diet on insulin, I realised I was counter-acting the medication by how I ate and started following the IR diet. My side effects literally went away overnight and I have never had a problem since. Dosing up really slowly is also a really big help for some.

Hope it helps!

Juliee,

I have had sucess with the diarrhea by breaking up my doses. I asked my doctor for a prescription of 500mg doses rather than 1000mg and take them four times a day. A bit harder to remember at first but a lot easier on my stomache.

Red face Thanks for sharing info on Met.

I started the Medifast diet for diabetics today. So far my stomach is liking it. I hope this helps everything else as well. I will keep you posted on the progress.
