Default rant

wtf is up with pregnant smokers? i don't get it. i work in a hospital, and as anyone who works in a hospital knows, it can be really, really stressful. so usually when the weather is nice, i'll go outside w/my coworkers on break when they go to smoke. i used to smoke myself, i quit about a year ago, so it's just kind of routine. anyhow, today - like, 2 hours ago, my friend & i were standing there, she's smoking, we're just ya know gossiping or whatever and then this OBVIOUSLY pregnant woman walks up and asks my friend if she can bum a smoke. she looks like she is MAYBE my age and she starts telling us all casually about how she's in the hospial because she is about to give birth to her SIXTH child. all i could think was, yeah you'd better puff that cigarette then! i mean WTF. i quit smoking, drinking alcohol, drinking coffee, etc just to ttc and here she is - admitted in to the hospital, about to give BIRTH and she's smoking and you know what i think what bothered me the most was that she didn't even seem a bit ashamed.

i edited to add: i know most women are fertile. this is something that drives me insane but i accept it. although i do get very jealous and insecure around pregnant women/new mothers, i don't ever actually resent them. i'm always happy for them somewhere inside and just miserable for myself. but when i see pregnant women smoking (and this is far from the first) i am just shocked and disgusted. every single person on planet earth knows the dangers of smoking and the risks with a baby - you consider that to be ok? to be no big deal? if and when i get my bfp, i won't even go outside for fresh air with my smoker friends - i don't want to be anywhere near it. how are they not scared that they're hurting their baby?? or do they just not CARE? wtf?

What angers me the most is seeing people in public who are screwing up their kids because they have no idea how to raise them. Like the other day, I was at the Dollar Store and this lady had her kid in the cart and he was grabbing stuff from the shelves and throwing it everywhere. (He was about 8) She just kept screaming at the top of her lungs, and every time she did, he got worse. You could hear her all over the store. She was a crazy lady and she was conditioning her kid to be crazy, too....and he was well on his way. Why does she have a kid when all she's going to do is screw it up, and my husband and I can't? It's so unfair!!!

I get so mad when I see pregnant women smoking and drinking (yeah I've seen both). I just think why do they deserve to have a baby when I can't? It may sound mean, but it just makes me so mad! I mean, I try not to do anything they might possibley hurt my future baby, I haven't drank in over a year, I don't even use harsh cleaning products!
Just wanted to join in the rant, this is one of the things that really really irritates me every time I see it.

Ugh, it disgusts me when pregnant women smoke. I have seen so many of them smoke, it's like can they not read the carton of cigarettes? It says blatantly that smoking while pregnant can cause birth defects. That obviously shows that they're irresponsible when it comes to themselves, so they will more then likely be irresponsible with their child. And don't even get me started on women that DRINK while they're pregnant. I couldn't imagine how guilty I would feel if my child was born with FAS or something else that would hinder their lives. It's one thing to drink and damage your own body but to subject an innocent child to such ridiculous behavior is beyond me...

I don't get it either. I went to an old childhood friend's baby shower in April. Her pregnancy was an accident. She's 23 years old, a law student, intelligent as hell, yet she was seven months pregnant and smoking outside with her guests (her own mom included!) as if it was no big deal. No one thought any different, as far as I know. I was appalled, just disgusted beyond words. Amazing that in this day and age people still do that while pregnant. Yeah, my mom smoked while pregnant with me, but the research and knowledge base was not what it is today. There is NO excuse.

Gross. Just plain gross.

Not only is smoking a horrible habit to have when not pregnant, they are setting that baby up for hundreds of possible problems.
In 1979 when my mom found out she was pregnant with me she quit cold turkey and has never smoked again. And that's when it was considered "safe" for people to smoke.

I'd like to go slap the crap out of those women, but I'm trying to protect my own baby and my own lungs so I just stay the heck away from them.

I agree with every single sentiment expressed by all of you gals. I find it inconceivable why people drink, smoke, etc. when they are pregnant. My DH works in law enforcement and used to come home SO upset because they would always do search warrants and find homes with crack and pot and every other thing you could imagine and there would be several children and pregnant women around, ALL of the time. It used to make him almost sick it would upset him so much. I just don't understand why we all have to struggle so, when so many people that don't want children have them carelessly.

Sarahjean - last winter my husband and I were still living in our old apartment and around November-ish, by some awful twist of fate, this notoriously scummy couple moved in above us. we live in a really small town so we already knew that the woman had been to prison for meth. the guy had no job, was in and out of jail. well as soon as they moved in the trouble started. all night parties, fights, drunk people outside yelling & knocking on our door (mind you we lived in the bottom half of a house and they lived upstairs) at all hours, etc. every single night. they would argue and scream at each other about who got the first hit, who smoked all the crack, who spent the crack money i mean just whatever, it was insane. my dh's best friend is also in law enforcement and they eventually got raided with a ton of drugs.

and throughout all of this, she was pregnant. combined they had 4 kids already, all by other people, none of whom they had custody of. and i was living downstairs, being dx'ed with pcos in december and just living my whole ttc trip.... it's inconceivable you are exactly right.
